About the Trust

The West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds provides acute and secondary care services, including emergency department, maternity and neonatal services, day surgery unit, eye treatment centre, Macmillan unit and children’s ward.
The Role
We are delighted to invite applications for two Consultant posts in Emergency Medicine at West Suffolk Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, forward-thinking team that is passionate about delivering high-quality, patient-centred emergency care. The post is offered on an annualised rota on a 1:10 on-call basis, designed to provide flexibility while maintaining robust senior coverage across the department.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking exceptional Emergency Medicine clinicians with strong core skills and the ambition to develop subspecialty interests that can benefit our service or patient groups. We particularly welcome applicants with expertise in areas such as resuscitation, ultrasound, clinical governance, medical leadership, and teaching and education.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must hold an MBChB or MBBS or equivalent qualification. You must also be FRCEM or equivalent certified and hold ALS, ATLS, and APLS certifications. Additionally, you must be on the GMC Specialist Register and hold a licence to practise, or be eligible for entry on the Register within six months of completion of Certificate of Completion of Training at the time of interview.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, having instructor status in life support courses and substantive work experience in UK Emergency Medicine would be advantageous. Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in relevant specialty is also highly valued.
Essential Experience
You must be able to demonstrate thorough training in Emergency Medicine and provide evidence of your ability to offer expert clinical opinion on all aspects within EM. You should be able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Knowledge and Skills
All applicants must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. You should have a thorough knowledge and understanding of ‘Good Medical Practice’ from the GMC and be able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Technical Skills
You must be able to organize and prioritize your workload effectively and demonstrate an understanding of accountability for patient care. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role.
Clinical Governance
Understanding of clinical governance and the ability to demonstrate personal continuing development is crucial. You should be willing to participate in QIP and show understanding of patient safety and risk management.
Research Interest
We value candidates with an interest in research and a commitment to supporting research or skills in critical appraisal. Evidence of implementing relevant evidence-based medicine and experience of guideline appraisal would be advantageous.
Management Ability
Demonstrable leadership qualities are essential for this role. You should have IT literacy, the ability to share departmental management duties, and strong time management skills. Evidence of management experience or training would be desirable.
Teaching Experience
Experience in effective teaching is required. While not essential, having a recognized teaching qualification would be advantageous for candidates interested in contributing to medical education.
Our Emergency Department
The department is a 24/7 unit dealing with unselected patients of all ages. Our facilities include a majors and resuscitation area, a Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT) zone, a dedicated additional majors unit with single cubicles for managing infectious patients, a paediatric emergency area, and a minor injuries and illnesses unit.
Paediatric Services
Children requiring emergency care in the West Suffolk area have access to a dedicated 24/7 children’s area within the main emergency department. This self-contained space has its own triage room, 6 trolley spaces, waiting area, and dedicated facilities including toilets, a kitchen area, sluice, and drug prep area.
Professional Development
We currently have 3 consultant paediatricians working clinical PAs in ED to help support with the clinical education of junior doctors and the treatment of patients. The paediatric nursing team includes a band 7 lead, band 6 nurses, and experienced band 5 nurses, all of whom have extensive clinical experience in paediatric emergency care.
Support for International Candidates
