Role Overview
As a Consultant Haematologist, you will join a team of 7 consultants providing comprehensive haematology services across four hospitals in west Wales. This post is based at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth and will involve supporting the wider team across all sites. You will have the opportunity to develop a subspecialty interest while contributing to the general haematology service. The position includes 10 clinical sessions per week with 20% non-clinical work (SPA) within the job plan.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate experience in the management of all haematological conditions. You will develop a subspecialty across the health board and work alongside other consultants to contribute to subspecialisation teams. Key responsibilities include consulting on inpatients, participating in 3-4 outpatient clinics weekly, providing laboratory support including blood film analysis and bone marrow reporting, and participating in multidisciplinary team meetings.
Clinical Duties
Clinical responsibilities include comprehensive management of all haematological conditions. You will consult on inpatients with local medical teams, provide additional teaching on haematology patient management, and liaise with the Acute Oncology Service covering haematology in-patients. For outpatient care, you will participate in 3-4 clinics per week, with consideration for additional subspecialist workload based on experience. Given the rural setting, phone clinics are encouraged to accommodate patients unable to travel.
Laboratory and MDT Involvement
The post includes laboratory responsibilities such as providing advice and input on blood films and reporting bone marrow reports. You will participate in the weekly health board-wide MDT and have opportunities to join other MDTs from all Wales MDTs, including Lymphoma, Myeloma, and Myeloid teams. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive patient care and professional development opportunities.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential qualifications include full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council. You must be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or be expected to obtain CCT within six months of interview date. A valid Certified Advanced Life Support certification is also required. Where a sub-specialty interest is required, sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice – fellowship or equivalent level experience.
Essential Experience
Candidates must have broad-based experience within the haematology specialty area and demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post. Experience of leading a team is essential. The appointee will be required to contribute to all aspects of general haematology and haemo-oncology work, including participation in departmental meetings and on-call rota.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, previous experience working in the UK or NHS is highly desirable. Additional higher qualifications and a teaching qualification are also considered advantageous. Welsh language skills (Level 1) are desirable but not required. The health board welcomes applications from all sections of society and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace.
Teaching and Research
The role includes significant teaching responsibilities. You will be expected to critically assess learning requirements for self and others, organize teaching programs for all staff groups, and teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff. In terms of research, you must demonstrate knowledge of current research and best practice, keep up-to-date with developments, locate and use clinical guidelines appropriately, and communicate research evidence effectively.
Clinical Governance and Safeguarding
As a consultant, you will have a key role in clinical governance, including participation in clinical audit or quality improvement projects and understanding the role of audit in improving medical practice. Knowledge of annual job planning and appraisal review processes is required. Additionally, you must demonstrate knowledge of safeguarding requirements, take appropriate responsibility, and apply equality and diversity legislation appropriately.
Professional Development
Hywel Dda University Health Board is committed to providing opportunities for professional development. The post includes 20% non-clinical work time (SPA) for research, teaching, and administrative activities. Discussions around working pattern will take place during initial job planning, where preferences, requirements, and options can be discussed and explored in full. The health board supports continuing medical education and professional advancement.
Certificate of Sponsorship
Applications from international candidates requiring skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. The health board will provide a Certificate of Sponsorship for eligible candidates. From 6 April 2017, skilled worker applicants must present criminal record certificates from each country they have resided in continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years.
