About the Role
The successful candidate will join our established Paediatric Audiology team, which is committed to providing exceptional care to children with hearing impairments. You will be working in a well-equipped department with the latest audiology technology, serving children from newborns to 18 years of age. The role requires an experienced Audiologist with a good knowledge of Paediatric Audiology Hearing Assessments, with NHS experience obtained within the last two years.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Paediatric Audiologist, you will be responsible for performing diagnostic hearing assessments on pre-school and school age children and analyzing the results. This includes Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA), Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA), Performance testing, Speech discrimination testing, Tests of middle ear function using tympanometry, and Otoacoustic Emissions. You will also complete audiological testing of babies referred following their newborn hearing screen.
Clinical Duties
You will carry out otoscopy following BSA recommended procedures, identify any contraindications or indications for further procedures, and take accurate and safe impressions of the ear. You will arrange referrals to other professionals for treatment/management when required, following local and national guidance. Additionally, you will manage hearing loss in infants and children, dispense, fit and maintain digital hearing aids using MCHAS guidelines and protocols.
Professional Responsibilities
Maintaining accurate recording of results and updating patient records in line with department and trust policies is essential. You will write reports to relevant health professionals and update the national S4H database with results of hearing tests following referral from the neonatal hearing screening team. Ensuring adequate and smooth transition of children onto Adult Audiology Services via a Transition Clinic is also a key responsibility.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: BSc/MSc Audiology or equivalent (e.g., BTEC in MPPM, BAAT Parts 1 and 2 and HNC MPPM). Registration with AHCS/HCPC or working towards registration.
Desirable: Additional qualifications in paediatric audiology or related field.
Experience
Essential: NHS experience to include paediatric audiometric assessment including full range of behavioural audiometric tests. Experience in managing infants and children with hearing loss. Experience in carrying out audits and surveys within a clinical setup. Excellent experience of paediatric hearing aid assessment, fitting and rehabilitation.
Desirable: Good experience in paediatric diagnostic tests including OAEs. Experience in audits and introduction of service developments.
Skills and Attributes
Ability to carry out a full range of paediatric audiology diagnostic tests. Ability to meet strict deadlines when necessary. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. The ability to communicate sensitively and empathically. Excellent team player with good organisational skills. Ability to keep accurate and legible patient records and statistical information. Demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance. Good IT skills.
