Job Overview
We are seeking a Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to join our Adolescent In-Patient Unit at Forest House Adolescent Unit within Radlett in Hertfordshire. This is an exciting opportunity for qualified psychiatrists to work in a specialist environment providing care to children and young people aged 13 to 18.

About CAMHS
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) is part of the Specialist Services Strategic Business Unit in HPFT, managed by the Clinical Director Dr Shaheen Shora and Fiona McMillian-Shields (non-medical). CAMHS is led by Senior Service Line Leader Gill Bienveniste, supported by Professional Leads and CAMHS Community Managers.
Service Details
Clinics accept referrals from multiple sources including General Practitioners, Social Workers, Health Visitors, and Consultant Paediatricians. Referrals are processed through SPA (the Single Point of Access), and our multi-disciplinary teams consist of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Mental Health Nurses, Child Psychotherapists, Systemic Therapists, and Social Workers.
About Forest House
Forest House is a specialist psychiatric inpatient unit providing care to children and young people aged 13 to 18. The unit admits children through a planned process of assessment, family consultation, and liaison with the local CAMHS Tier 3 team. Recently refurbished and extended to 16 beds, the facility includes acute admissions and serves as an in-patient adolescent unit for East of England NHS.
Specialist Services
The unit also provides dedicated services for eating disorder admissions under the supervision of a specialized Eating Disorder Service. This creates a comprehensive care environment for young people with complex mental health needs.
Job Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work alongside one substantive consultant and a medical team composed of Specialty Doctors, GP trainees, Psychiatry Specialty and Core Trainees. The post holder will complement and support the Senior Leadership Team including the other consultant, Therapy Lead, Modern Matron, Team Leaders, Consultant Social worker, and Home Treatment Team Lead.
Clinical Duties
Key responsibilities include managing, appraising, and giving professional supervision to junior medical staff in accordance with Trust policies. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework. The post holder will ensure junior staff operate within New Deal parameters and are Working Time Directive compliant.
Administrative Requirements
The role requires undertaking administrative duties associated with patient care, recording clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submitting information promptly to the Information Department. Participation in service and business planning activities is also expected for both the locality and the wider mental health service.
Professional Development
Applicants must participate in annual appraisal processes, attend academic programmes including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme, and maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, including Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval.
Management Responsibilities
The post holder will participate annually in job plan reviews with the clinical manager, work with local managers and professional colleagues to ensure efficient service running, and contribute to the medical management of services. Compliance with Trust policies, procedures, standing orders, and financial instructions is essential.
Qualifications Required
Essential qualifications include an MB BS or equivalent medical qualification and a higher qualification in psychiatry such as MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
Experience Requirements
Essential experience includes the full range of clinical responsibilities expected of a consultant in child and adolescent services, experience of collaborative working with social care and other agencies, and working with service users who have complex needs within child and adolescent services.
Clinical Skills
Applicants must demonstrate excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty. Experience in making decisions based on evidence and experience is also required.
Professional Registration
Essential requirements include full GMC registration with a licence to practise, CCT in Psychiatry or inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in psychiatry, and Section 12/Approved clinician approval. Being in good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice is desirable.
Academic Requirements
Applicants must be able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training, participate in continuous professional development, and have experience in research or service evaluation. The ability to use and appraise clinical evidence and active participation in clinical audit are also essential.
Additional Requirements
Holding a full valid driving license and access to a car is required unless the applicant has a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Desirable qualifications include higher degrees in medical education, clinical research, or management.

Employment Details
This is a permanent, part-time position with a salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year (Pr Rata Pro Annum). The position is based at Forest House Adolescent Unit, Kingfisher Court, Harper Lane, Kingsley Green, Radlett, WD7 9HQ.
