About the Role
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced MFU Specialty Doctor to join their Maxillofacial Unit. This is a fantastic opportunity for qualified dental professionals with expertise in oral and maxillofacial surgery to work within one of the UK’s leading NHS trusts. The position offers a fixed-term contract with flexible working patterns and competitive salary.
Job Summary
The post holder will be expected to undertake outpatient sessions and Local Anaesthesia (L/A) Minor Oral Surgery sessions as well as day case operating lists carrying out mostly dento-alveolar and soft tissue surgery. There are two post options available: Post 1 working at Leighton Hospital Crewe and Aintree University Hospital Maxillofacial Units, or Post 2 working at Ormskirk Hospital (2 days) and Aintree Hospital (2 days, 0.8wte). A requirement to cover A&E and ward emergencies is also necessary.
Key Responsibilities
The post holder will supervise, support and collaborate with other practitioners as agreed to be appropriate with the Clinical Director. The Speciality Doctor will have a role in the training and supervising Dental Core Trainees (DCTs) in Outpatient Department (OPD) and L/A Minor oral surgery. The post holder will be expected to undertake OPD sessions and L/A Minor Oral Surgery sessions as well as minor skin surgery (appropriate to level of experience at Aintree).
Post 1 Details
For Post 1, the successful candidate will work at Leighton Hospital Crewe and Aintree University Hospital Maxillofacial Units. The unit in Leighton Hospital Crewe is led by Miss F Bekiroglu with Miss K Fleming and Mr M Smith providing a service on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. This post is managed by the regional unit based at Aintree.
Post 2 Details
Post 2 offers a 0.8 whole-time equivalent split between Ormskirk Hospital (2 days) and Aintree Hospital (2 days). At Ormskirk Hospital, the unit is led by Mr Mark Boyle and Mr Owais Khattak and works closely with the Aintree unit. At Aintree, the post holder will carry out mainly Maxillofacial Oral Surgery (MOS) under Local Anaesthesia as well as dentoalveolar clinics and assist with minor skin surgery under LA.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years postgraduate training (or the equivalent) which is recognised for full or limited (not provisional) registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) as a dentist. Two of these years must be in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, or equivalent experience and competencies. Additionally, candidates must hold BDS or equivalent and MFDS or equivalent qualifications.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, having an Immediate Life Support (ILS) qualification and a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Higher education and learning would be advantageous for this position.
Essential Experience
Candidates must have at least two years Dental Core Trainee (DCT)/Senior House Officer (SHO) training in an approved oral surgery/maxillofacial surgery post. Experience in management of oral and maxillofacial problems is required, along with capability and experience in clinical and operative dento-alveolar surgery.
Desirable Experience
Independent operating experience in day case theatres is desirable but not essential for this position.
