Job Summary
We have two full-time Consultant Neonatologist positions available at 10 programmed activities. The neonatal unit serves as the regional surgical neonatal intensive care in the West Midlands, with 44 cots total, including 24 intensive care and high dependency cots, and 20 special care cots. Our unit handles some of the highest activity levels in the country with a complex and varied case mix, and includes a separate Transitional Care ward for 12 mothers and up to 16 babies.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidates will be key members of the Trust’s senior medical team, working closely with the Clinical Service Lead, other consultant neonatologists, the Directorate Manager, and senior nursing team to achieve Directorate objectives. Responsibilities include participating in the support service for surgical neonatal patients at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, outpatient follow-up of neonates, and maintaining high clinical standards in the management of both well and ill newborns.
Clinical Duties
Post holders will share responsibility for day-to-day management of the NICU and associated work, with on-call commitment on a 1 in 14 basis. The role includes teaching and training of junior staff, neonatal nursing staff, visiting medical staff, midwives, and medical students. You’ll also participate in Health Education West Midlands activities including ARCP’s and regional training days, as well as West Midlands Operational Delivery Network activities.
Specialist Roles
Post (A) includes 1 SPA for Fetal Medicine/Palliative Care lead, working closely with Fetal Medicine and Palliative Care teams to develop clear pathways of neonatal involvement and enhance palliative care from antenatal counseling through post-mortem care. Post (B) includes 1 SPA for Education and Guidelines lead, coordinating the education program and implementing network guidelines.
Person Specification – Qualifications
Essential: Fully registered with the GMC; MRCPCH; CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent training, or within 6 months of CCT on the date of interview.
Desirable: Higher degree (e.g., PhD, MD).
Person Specification – Experience
Essential: Wide neonatal ICU experience; advanced clinical skills in neonatal medicine; valid NLS or ARNI certification; valid Level 3 Safeguarding; ability to demonstrate competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training.
Desirable: NLS/ARNI Instructor status; competence in Neonatal Echocardiography and cranial ultrasonography.
