Role Details
Our team works across Hull and East Yorkshire providing adult speech and language therapy across a number of community settings including community inpatient units, clinics, specialist multi disciplinary stroke services, a regular community videofluoroscopy clinic, and domiciliary visits. This role includes working across multiple sites, patient homes, and community settings. You will be well supported by senior staff with advanced clinical knowledge in areas of dysphagia and acquired communication difficulties and external clinical voice supervision will be provided to support you whilst developing your band 7 competencies.
Key Responsibilities
As an Advanced Speech and Language Therapist (Development Role), you will:
- Provide specialist assessment and intervention to adults with complex voice, communication and swallowing needs.
- Manage a diverse caseload, triage referrals and deliver evidence based therapy using advanced clinical reasoning.
- Support the community videofluoroscopy service
- Work autonomously within professional guidelines, supported by supervisors and the wider MDT.
- Contribute specialist advice to colleagues, patients and external agencies.
- Support and co ordinate day to day operations within your clinical area.
- Participate in service development, quality improvement, clinical governance and audit.
- Provide clinical supervision, training and mentorship to junior staff, assistants and students.
- Engage in professional networking regionally and nationally.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must possess a Degree/ Postgraduate qualification leading to licence to practice. You must also have current Full RCSLT membership including completion of NQP competencies and current HCPC registration. Additionally, you need a post graduate Dysphagia qualification and/or evidence of competence at the specialist/ enhanced level on the RCSLT Dysphagia competencies. Finally, we require sound postgraduate experience working with a voice caseload and evidence of completing some voice specialist training such as Voice Fit to Practice or Introductory courses to voice therapy.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, having postgraduate dysphagia qualifications and/or evidence of competence at the highly specialist/Advanced level on the RCSLT dysphagia competencies would be advantageous. This may include completion of courses/competencies related to videofluoroscopy or FEES assessments. Significant post graduate training within specialist area of voice, including completion of recognised post graduate training in courses specific to voice clinical area such as Accent method, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Brief Solution Focused therapy, laryngeal manipulation, PhoRTE, or LSVT would also be beneficial.
Required Knowledge
You must demonstrate a full understanding of relevant policy, legislation and guidance relevant to clinical and service area. Additionally, you need a full understanding/application of relevant clinical practice/standards/audit within identified clinical area and specialist understanding of relevant clinical practice, standards and protocols within identified clinical area. Evidence of undertaking audits/survey and basic IT skills are also essential requirements for this position.
Desirable Knowledge
An advanced/expert understanding of relevant clinical practice, standards and protocols within identified clinical area would be highly valued. Membership of a specialist interest group/network, locally or regionally demonstrates professional commitment. Good working knowledge of relevant IT systems to your area of work would also be beneficial in this role.
Essential Experience
You must have evidence of sound post-registration professional practice and evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the clinical area at a specialist level of care. Experience of multi-agency/professional working and experience of case load management within specialist service area are essential requirements. Additionally, you need evidence of promoting/supporting active patient/relative involvement/participation and evidence of supporting students on placements and supervision of junior colleagues such as assistants or newly qualified staff.
Desirable Experience
Demonstrable experience of working in the specific field where the post is held, including independent caseload management and ability to prioritise and triage referrals would be advantageous. Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the clinical area to advanced level, such as Masters/post-graduate diploma and equivalent knowledge/experiential learning/experience would strengthen your application. Evidence of advanced practice skills and able to demonstrate the impact of this on practice change/development is also desirable.

Professional Development
This development role offers structured competency development and advanced training to help you grow into an advanced clinical position. You’ll receive mentorship from senior staff with advanced clinical knowledge in areas of dysphagia and acquired communication difficulties. External clinical voice supervision will be provided to support you whilst developing your band 7 competencies.
Salary and Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary ranging from £39,959 to £48,117 per annum, paid on the Agenda for Change pay scheme. The role is permanent and full-time, offering stability and opportunities for career progression within our organization.
