Job Overview
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Substantive Consultant in Urology to join their dedicated team at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. This permanent position offers both full-time and part-time working patterns with a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum. The post holder will have the opportunity to work in a service that has recently received significant investment and opened a new Urology Investigations Unit.
Role Responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to a 24/7 urology emergency rota, serving as the surgeon-of-the-week on a 1 in 5 week basis at the Cumberland Infirmary site. During emergency weeks, elective activities are cancelled, and the emergency service is supported by a resident doctor tier including registrars, core trainees, and Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs). The post holder will be expected to be trained and competent in both elective and emergency management of urological complications.
Working Environment
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust has recently invested in robotic surgery at the Cumberland Infirmary and is launching an exciting new robotics programme. This represents a significant opportunity to be involved at an early stage in developing a modern robotic service. Candidates with experience in, or a strong interest in developing, robotic surgery for urology in lower urinary tract procedures are particularly encouraged to apply.
Qualifications – Essential
Applicants must hold Valid Full Registration with the General Medical Council and possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent. You must have a relevant CCT, CESR or equivalent (with equivalence confirmed by PMETB/GMC by the date of the Annual Assessment Centre). Additionally, you must be on the Specialist Register for the above or within 6 months of being admitted to the Register by the AAC date.
Qualifications – Desirable
While not required, candidates with other relevant medical and non-medical training/degrees, MD or PhD degrees, or other relevant postgraduate qualifications may have an advantage. A proven track record in undertaking research projects is also desirable for this position.
Skills and Knowledge
The successful candidate must be able to offer expert opinion on clinical specialist problems in Urology Surgery and demonstrate sound wide-based knowledge of urology surgical conditions. You must also have the ability to take full and independent responsibility for urology surgical patients. A proven track record in undertaking research projects would be beneficial.
Experience Requirements
Applicants must have a high level of clinical experience and competence in managing the breadth of common urological surgical conditions. You should demonstrate adequate surgical experience of index urology surgical procedures and operations. Experience of training and supervising junior medical staff and students is also essential.
Leadership and Management
Candidates should have evidence of participation in clinical audits and the ability to lead a surgical team. You must demonstrate commitment to continuing medical education, appraisal, and clinical governance. A demonstration of implemented change in clinical practice would be advantageous.
Research and Teaching
The post holder should have undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience and the ability to critically appraise research, applying research outcomes to clinical problems. You should also be capable of supervising junior staff undertaking research projects. Formal teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level and publications in peer-reviewed journals are desirable.
Personal Qualities
Candidates must be able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with excellent communication skills. You should have an enquiring and critical approach to work, ability to organize workload efficiently, and demonstrate empathy to patients. You must cope well in stressful work situations and display enthusiasm and initiative.

Standard Check costs £28 (£21.50 + £6.50 administration) and Enhanced Check costs £56 (£49.50 + £6.50 administration), either deducted over 4 months or as a one-off payment.
