About the Role
We are excited to announce a unique training opportunity for Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) – Health Visiting with September 2026 intake. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified nurses to develop their careers in public health while contributing to improving the health outcomes of children and families in Gloucestershire.
Programme Options
This training programme offers multiple pathways to suit different career aspirations:
- MSc in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)
- Post Graduate Diploma (PGDip) in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)
The programme combines theoretical learning at the University of the West England (Bristol) with practical clinical placement experience within Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust.
Key Responsibilities
During the training programme, you will be expected to:
- Take responsibility for identifying and meeting your own learning needs with support from the university and your Practice Assessor/Supervisor
- Work as part of the Public Health Nursing team, providing specialist advice and care to children, young people and their families
- Contribute to an integrated multi-disciplinary team around the child, young person and their family
- Provide evidence-based advice and care founded on thorough assessment of need
- Develop new public health and leadership skills
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records according to service guidelines
- Be proactive in identifying risk factors and signs of child abuse
Programme Structure
Specialist Community Public Health Nursing is a one year full-time course combining taught modules with clinical placement. The aim is to prepare SCPHNs with the knowledge and skills to provide leadership and innovation in community health, with a particular focus on improving the health of children and families.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for this training opportunity, you must meet specific requirements:
Essential Qualifications
- Live registration on either the first or second part of the NMC register
- BSc or BA (Hons) degree in any discipline (healthcare-related preferred)
- Minimum of 120 credits at level 2 or above
Essential Experience

>NMC registration as a nurse (level 1) or midwife
>Demonstrates an understanding of public health nursing in application
>Has an understanding and awareness of Safeguarding children
Desirable Qualifications

>Able to demonstrate clinical knowledge relating to children & young people
>Understanding of Government policy in current child health programmes and impact on local needs

Clinical Placement
Your clinical placement will be within Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, providing you with hands-on experience in public health nursing. You will work alongside experienced practitioners and gain valuable practical skills in assessment, intervention, and evaluation of care.
Interview Process
Interview dates are scheduled for 3 & 4 June 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview where they will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and commitment to public health nursing.
