About the Position
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is seeking an enthusiastic Locum Consultant Urologist to cover maternity leave within their established team. This is a fantastic opportunity for international medical professionals to work in the UK’s NHS system while gaining valuable experience in a well-respected healthcare organization.
The Urology Directorate provides comprehensive services for the population of Gwent from their base at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. The team consists of 10 urology consultants, 4 Specialist Registrars, 2-3 senior clinical fellows, 12 urology nurse practitioners/ANPs, and 1 surgical care practitioner.
In addition to services at the Royal Gwent Hospital, the department also provides an on-call service to the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran, where emergency and critical care services are based. This provides an excellent opportunity for diverse clinical experience across multiple sites.
Department Facilities
The Urology Department at the Royal Gwent Hospital is housed in a special dedicated Diagnostic and Treatment Unit that includes comprehensive facilities for diagnostic and treatment procedures, as well as office space for clinical staff. The department is conveniently located adjacent to an elective admission ward, Urology Assessment Unit, and emergency admission ward.
The main radiology department is in close proximity to the urology facilities, as is the urology day case unit and urology theatres, which provide both inpatient and day case facilities. Notably, the department commenced robotic surgery in June 2024, which is situated in the main theatre suite at the Royal Gwent Hospital.
These state-of-the-art facilities provide an excellent environment for delivering high-quality urological care and for professional development in advanced surgical techniques.
Main Duties
The post holder will be responsible for providing a comprehensive urology service with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of urological diseases. This is a crucial role within the department that will directly impact patient care outcomes.
The post holder’s timetable will include attending 2-3 outpatient clinics per week and undertaking 2-3 treatment or diagnostic sessions per week. In addition to clinical duties, there will be administrative responsibilities and the provision of care for inpatients and emergency admissions.
Continuing responsibility for patient care will be required in liaison with consultant colleagues. The post holder will also be expected to provide supervision to junior members of the medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical practice are maintained.
The successful candidate will need to interface effectively with nurse specialists, the wider team, patients, and their families. Clinical practice must be conducted in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of the Division’s and Health Board’s agreed objectives.
