Main Duties of the Job
As a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, you will act as a consultant psychiatrist, approved clinician, and responsible clinician on Garner Ward. You’ll hold overall approved clinician responsibility for all 16 patients on the ward and share Section 12 work with other approved clinicians. Your responsibilities include:
- Reviewing patients and liaising with families and other professionals
- Providing clinical supervision to junior doctors
- Attending ward meetings, including board rounds and Future Care Planning Meetings
- Formulating treatment plans and providing guidance on evidence-based treatment
- Maintaining good relationships with multi-disciplinary teams
- Occasionally providing expert advice to courts on Trust patients
Person Specification – Qualifications and Training
Essential:
- Recognised Medical Degree
- Full GMC Registration
- Inclusion (or eligibility for inclusion) on the Specialist Register or a Specialty Trainee within 6 months of gaining CCT
- Section 12 Approval
Desirable:
- Relevant Higher Degree e.g., MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
- Completion of Clinical and Educational Supervisor Training
- Approved Clinician status

Essential:
- Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
- Experience working in an Inpatient setting
Desirable:
- Experience of working across different services within mental health
- Other relevant experience, e.g., specific psychological therapies
- Qualifications or experience in managing physical illness
