About the Emergency Medicine Department
Emergency Medicine is at the heart of our hospital’s emergency care pathway, providing high-quality care for patients from the moment they arrive. Our department is led by a highly motivated group of Consultants who are dedicated to delivering exceptional care with a continuous drive to develop and improve our services. We have recently moved into a state-of-the-art new emergency department building designed with modern facilities to enhance both staff and patient experience.
Key Department Features
Our emergency department is one of the busiest in South England, featuring a large 8-bedded resuscitation room, urgent care area, and an expanded Children’s Emergency Department with an integrated Radiology Hub including on-site CT scanning. The new department’s cubiclised layout promotes better infection control while ensuring dignity and privacy for our patients. As part of our capital build project, our emergency department team has been integral to quality improvement across the unscheduled care pathway.
Job Responsibilities
As a Consultant in Emergency Medicine, you will be appointed to a 10-session clinical contract with 8 sessions of direct clinical care and 2 sessions of supporting clinical activity. You will have every opportunity to develop your professional interests while supporting our ambition to provide safe and effective care. Our department provides mentoring to newly qualified Consultants, allowing you to develop extended Consultant skills in a supportive environment.
Clinical Duties
Your responsibilities will include providing high-quality emergency care to both adult and pediatric patients, participating in clinical governance initiatives, and ensuring that critical incidents and near misses are appropriately reported. You will also be expected to participate in investigating incidents related to the Emergency Department and assist in implementing changes to clinical practice that improve patient outcomes.

The Trust has recently been supported by NHSI and received praise for our redirection pathways from triage, the nurse-led Emergency Care centre (ECC), and our staff’s efforts to improve patient safety.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must have full GMC registration with a licence to practice. You must also have entry on the GMC Specialty Register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR, or European Community Rights. Additionally, you must hold ALS, ATLS or ETC, APLS provider status and instructor status in at least one life support course. You must be revalidated or in a state of readiness for future revalidation.
Essential Experience
You must demonstrate extensive experience of the full range of Emergency Medicine presentations. Your experience should include understanding of clinical risk management, critical care skills to enable stabilization of all patients in ED resusc, and appropriate level of clinical knowledge. You should also have knowledge and use of evidence-based practice, effective IT skills, and experience both in and outside your specialty.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, evidence of participation in audit, good oral and written communication skills, publications, prizes and honours are desirable. Strong logical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making abilities, along with excellent team working and leadership skills, will be advantageous. A clear understanding of clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice is also highly valued.
