About the Role
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a permanent Consultant Ophthalmologist with a sub-specialist interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology. This position is predominantly based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) with responsibilities across both hospital sites. Paediatric theatre is currently based at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) Telford site.
Main Duties
Clinical responsibilities include providing comprehensive ophthalmic services, completing clinical sessions in theatre, specialist, and general clinics, and supporting professional activities. The successful candidate will receive and coordinate referrals from urgent eye clinics, optometrists, and other ophthalmic colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
The role requires developing enhanced clinical skills, particularly in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients. Excellent team-working skills are essential, with the ability to work effectively within a multi-professional team. The consultant will deliver clinical and quality targets agreed nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
Patient Care
The successful candidate will be expected to follow patients throughout their clinical pathways, ensuring continuity of care and maintaining high standards of clinical practice.
Person Specification
Entry criteria include full registration and a license to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC). To be eligible for consideration by an Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC), candidates must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register.
Essential Qualifications
Candidates must hold MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent medical qualification, and possess FRCOphth or equivalent qualifications. Post CCT Fellowship experience in a subspecialist area – Paediatric Ophthalmology is also essential.
Desirable Qualifications
A postgraduate qualification is desirable, although not essential for this position.
Job Plan
A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA (Programmed Activity) working week.
Weekly Commitments
For a full-time contract, the job plan includes 7.5 PAs of Direct Clinical Care, covering clinical activity, clinically related activity, predictable and unpredictable emergency work. On call duties are 1 in 9 weeks (which attracts 0.5 PA). Additionally, 2.5 PAs are allocated for Supporting Professional Activities.
