Job Summary
We are looking for a permanent Consultant Ophthalmologist with a sub-specialist interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology, predominantly based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) with responsibilities across both hospital sites. Paediatric theatre is currently based at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) Telford site. Contribution to an out of hours on call rota is core to this role.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical duties include providing ophthalmic services, completing clinical sessions in theatre, specialist, and general clinics, and completing supporting professional activities. You will receive and coordinate referrals from urgent eye clinics, optometrist and other ophthalmic colleagues.
The role requires developing enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients. You should have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
You will be expected to deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners, and to follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
Job Responsibilities
A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week.
The job plan will be reviewed annually and is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultant’s duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.
For a full-time contract, the job plan will be divided as follows: 7.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care includes clinical activity, clinically related activity, predictable and unpredictable emergency work. On call 1 in 9 weeks (which attracts 0.5 PA). 2.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities includes CPD, clinical supervision, audit, teaching, research, revalidation, service development.

Essential:
- Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- To be eligible for consideration for a consultant appointment by an Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC), candidates must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register. We welcome applications from candidates who are within six months of achieving Specialist Registration through either the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or the Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR)
- Post CCT Fellowship experience in a subspecialist area – Paediatric Ophthalmology
Qualifications
Essential:
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCOphth or equivalent
Desirable:
- Postgraduate qualification
