Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for clinically managing and controlling the temporary replacement of a patient’s cardiopulmonary function to enable cardiac surgery and support that function during other interventions. You will operate auxiliary equipment for the benefit of patient safety and the effectiveness of clinical outcomes, and assist in the development and management of the Department of Clinical Perfusion.
Key Responsibilities and Clinical Duties
You will choose the most appropriate equipment and disposable items for procedures, prepare equipment for cardiopulmonary bypass in routine and emergency cardiac surgery, and operate heart-lung machines and auxiliary equipment to maintain patients’ clinical conditions within physiological parameters. You will independently perform complex perfusion techniques including aortic procedures, autologous blood salvage, intra-aortic balloon pump management, and advanced blood gas analysis.
Quality of Care and Clinical Governance
As a Senior Clinical Perfusionist, you will lead departmental quality improvement, audit, and benchmarking activities, ensuring evidence-based best practice in all perfusion procedures. You will develop and review clinical policies, protocols, and risk management strategies to support patient safety, and act as a clinical expert and advisor within the multidisciplinary team.
Education, Training and Professional Development
You will provide formal and informal teaching to trainee perfusionists, nursing and medical staff, both within the Trust and externally at national/international level. You will act as mentor and assessor for trainee perfusionists, ensuring their personal logbooks and MSc programme requirements are met. You must maintain professional registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
Advanced Clinical Skills and Expertise
You will need to anticipate, assess, and respond rapidly to complex physiological and technical changes during cardiopulmonary bypass. Applying expert clinical judgement in critical and emergency scenarios will be essential, ensuring patient safety and effective decision-making under pressure while contributing to the development of novel perfusion strategies.

Essential Qualification: Three years post qualification or relevant experience
Essential Experience: Full UK CCPS registration
Language: English
Essential Requirements
All applicants must have full UK registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists and demonstrate at least three years of experience post qualification or equivalent relevant experience. You must be able to participate fully in the departmental on-call rota, acting independently in emergency and high-pressure situations.
Operational Excellence and Service Delivery
You will manage independent caseloads and coordinate perfusion service delivery across multiple theatres and Trust sites. Taking responsibility for equipment maintenance, stock control, and procurement will be key aspects of your role, ensuring smooth service delivery while maintaining resilience and sustained concentration during prolonged, complex procedures.
Professional Standards and Ethical Practice
Demonstrating professionalism at all times is essential, safeguarding patient dignity, confidentiality, and wellbeing. You will contribute to developing evidence-based practice within perfusion, ensuring national and local guidelines are applied consistently, and provide leadership in supporting team wellbeing after critical or traumatic cases.
