Job Summary
East London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adults Liaison Psychiatry to join their multidisciplinary team at Homerton University Hospital in Hackney. This is a rare opportunity to work in a highly-regarded liaison service with flexible working arrangements and excellent support from the team and wider Directorate.
Position Details
The role is a substantive post with flexible working options available. You will provide clinical leadership and work closely with the team manager and service lead to deliver high-quality assessment and treatment to adults and older adults attending Homerton Hospital Emergency Department due to mental health concerns.
About the Role
This position requires you to work with patients admitted to acute wards who require psychiatric input or advice. You’ll contribute to the overall management and service development with opportunities to develop clinical and medical leadership. While primarily focused on older adults, the small team structure requires cross-covering between consultants, meaning you’ll also assess working age adults.
Service Overview
Homerton University Hospital provides a liaison psychiatry service available 24/7. This service caters to patients with mental health conditions, dementia/delirium, substance misuse, and medically unexplained symptoms presenting to acute care. It follows NHS England’s ‘Core 24’ model of liaison psychiatry.
Service Features
The service operates a single point of access system ensuring comprehensive coverage. You’ll collaborate with various healthcare professionals including nurses, psychologists, social workers, and junior doctors to deliver integrated care.
Main Duties
Key responsibilities include providing expert psychiatric assessments, developing treatment plans, managing complex cases, and participating in service development. You’ll also contribute to teaching, training, and research activities within the department.
Clinical Leadership
You will be expected to provide leadership in clinical governance, service improvement initiatives, and multidisciplinary team meetings. The role involves regular supervision of junior doctors and allied health professionals.
Person Specification – Essential Qualifications
Full GMC registration with license to practise at appointment. Inclusion on GMC Specialist Register within six months (older adult or dual specialty). S12 approval or ability to achieve within three months. MRCPsych or equivalent. Approved clinician status or ability to achieve within three months.
Person Specification – Desirable Qualifications
A higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management is desirable. Formal leadership/management training is also beneficial for this role.
Additional Requirements
Experience working in liaison psychiatry settings and familiarity with acute hospital environments would be advantageous. Knowledge of digital health systems used in NHS Trusts is beneficial.
Skills and Abilities
Essential skills include multi-disciplinary teamwork, excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social approaches, managing clinical complexity, and commitment to service user involvement. Strong communication skills are crucial for liaising with various stakeholders.
Technical Proficiencies
Proficiency in psychiatric assessment tools, risk assessment frameworks, and electronic patient record systems is required. Experience in cognitive testing and diagnostic procedures for dementia is essential.
Knowledge Requirements
Excellent understanding of acute adult and older adult mental health service operations. Knowledge of relevant government guidelines, legislation, social care structures, and mental health law including Mental Capacity Act 2005 is mandatory.
Clinical Experience
Essential experience includes older adult mental health service operations, evidence-based interventions for diverse mental health disorders, and skills in assessing cognitive impairment, dementia, and delirium. Experience in crisis intervention is desirable.
Specialized Experience
Previous experience in liaison psychiatry settings, particularly in emergency departments and acute medical wards, is highly valued. Familiarity with dementia care pathways and delirium prevention strategies is advantageous.
Employment Details
