Job Summary
We are inviting applications for a Consultant Gastroenterologist with a special interest in Hepatology, primarily based at Colchester Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to provide a specialist clinical gastroenterology service, including inpatient, endoscopy and outpatient gastroenterology work. A broad knowledge of gastroenterology and general medicine is essential as is expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
Most of the departmental clinical work takes place at Colchester General Hospital. We run clinics and endoscopy lists at The Clacton Hospital too. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced gastroenterologist to develop their career within one of England’s largest NHS trusts.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The post-holder will have a range of important responsibilities within the department:
- Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care
- Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients and A&E
- Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care
- Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team
Specific clinical responsibilities include:
- Develop Hepatology services at Colchester
- Participation in Consultant led GI bleed on-call rota
- Outpatient Clinics including Specialist Clinics
- Endoscopy lists
- Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates
- Other care of inpatients or outpatients
- Clinical and other administration as required by agreement
- Participation in Clinical Governance
Essential Experience and Qualifications
All applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
- On GMC Specialist Register in GIM and Gastroenterology (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview)
- MBBS or equivalent; MRCP
- Full accreditation in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinions across a wide range of problems within the specialties of GIM and Gastroenterology
- Extensive experience working in National Health Service in the UK
- CCT in GIM and Gastroenterology
- Ability to perform all forms of GI endoscopy to a high standard, including haemostasis and other therapeutic procedures
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
- Willingness to undertake Educational/Clinical Supervisor training if not previously experienced
- Caring attitude to patients
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications and attributes would be advantageous:
- MD or PhD
- Training in a sub-specialty complementary to that of the existing consultants
- Management training and experience
- Living within a 10-mile radius of the relevant hospital site
