About the Role
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint two talented Consultant Geriatricians to join our dynamic medical team. This is a permanent position based at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, with opportunities for flexible working arrangements including full-time, part-time, and customized job plans to suit both the candidate and our patients’ needs.
Job Summary
We are looking to appoint two new colleagues to the Geriatric Medicine Department at University Hospitals Dorset, which comprises Poole Hospital, Bournemouth Hospital, and Christchurch Hospital. The main purpose of this post is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. A variety of roles are available depending on individual interests, and we are keen to create a job plan that suits both the candidate and the needs of our patients.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have completed specialist training in Geriatrics and will be expected to have or develop a subspecialty interest which could include interface and community geriatrics, orthogeriatrics and surgical liaison, or movement disorders. We are seeking flexible, enthusiastic, and self-motivated individuals who will develop as leaders and enhance service delivery within our changing organization.

Important Information for Applicants
Please note that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term. There is a planned move for this service anticipated during Summer 2026 when this role and base of work will relocate to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital site. Upon relocation, excess mileage allowance/reimbursement will not apply, and any travel between the postholder’s home and work base will be classified as a commute.
Working Arrangements
As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out-of-hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.
Essential Qualifications
Candidates must possess evidence of Certificate of Completion of Training for Geriatric Medicine and hold MRCP or equivalent qualifications. Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) is essential, along with evidence of basic medical qualification and completed specialty training.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, evidence of certificate of completion of training in General Internal Medicine and experience in quality improvement work and/or service redesign would be regarded favorably. Evidence of sub-specialty experience is also desirable.
Required Skills and Experience
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to prioritize and use initiative, along with excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. An approachable manner, flexible attitude, and evidence of ability to work as part of and engage with a multidisciplinary team are essential. Knowledge of current trends and developments within Geriatric Medicine is required.
Additional Requirements
Full GMC registration with a license to practice is essential, along with evidence of ALS training, IT literacy, innovation, and a commitment to the development of Geriatric Medicine. Candidates must be able to speak English and demonstrate evidence of being IT literate.
Salary and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. This is a permanent position with options for full-time, part-time, or flexible working arrangements to suit individual needs.
Location and Relocation
The role is based at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, located at Castle Lane East, Bournemouth, BH7 7DW. While there is a planned relocation to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital site during Summer 2026, the trust will ensure a smooth transition for all postholders. Any travel arrangements will be handled in accordance with Trust/National terms and conditions.
Certificate of Sponsorship
