Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work independently and unsupervised as an expert Advanced Practitioner in performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures, demonstrating advanced levels of clinical judgment, discretion, and decision-making skills. You will be expected to deliver endoscopic services carrying out gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy procedures to JAG accredited standards.
Role Components
The post holder’s job plan should deliver a minimum of 80% clinical component and 20% related to service & staff management, education & research. All ENPs will be expected to undertake a secondary role, which may include reading and reporting of capsule endoscopy, dyspepsia clinic, rectal bleeding clinic, or complex polyp MDT coordination when fully trained and competent. Other roles may arise as the service develops and grows.
Professional Development
You will develop and implement training across the department, actively providing clinical teaching and education to other colleagues (medical/nursing) to enhance clinical practice and improve patient care. Essential Qualifications
Applicants must be a Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC Register with evidence and ability to revalidate as required. Professional knowledge acquired through postgraduate degree or supplemented by specialist training, experience, and short courses to Masters level equivalent is essential. JAG Accreditation in Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy is also required, along with a Non-Medical Prescribing Course or willingness to undertake where this is a requirement of the role.
Desirable Qualifications
Additional qualifications that would be beneficial include an Advanced Life Support qualification, IR(ME)R Radiation exposure safety course, and BCSP Accreditation. These qualifications would enhance your application and demonstrate commitment to continuous professional development in the field of endoscopy.
Essential Experience
Candidates must have extensive post-registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Band 7 or above in a defined specialty, with extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level. You should demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to the specialty, with evidence of achievements and career development in your current post and ongoing professional development/competence.
Clinical Skills
You must be competent in a range of clinical skills and expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required. The ability to work under pressure across competing priorities while maintaining high standards of care is essential. You should also demonstrate an ability to lead clinical audit, analyze information, and develop robust measurable action plans to support improvement and change.
Communication Skills
Strong communication skills are vital, including the ability to communicate articulately and motivate others. You should be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of healthcare professionals on complex and sensitive issues that require persuasive and empathetic skills. The ability to adapt behavior to changing circumstances while maintaining a positive and enthusiastic attitude is also essential.
Management Responsibilities
The role includes leadership responsibilities, including the ability to lead and manage a team effectively. You should have evidence of a flexible and innovative approach to service delivery and development. Previous experience of leading on the writing or updating of organizational Policy/Procedure/Guidelines associated with the specialty would be advantageous.
Multi-disciplinary Working
Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross-agency work environment is essential, along with experience of patient service user advocacy roles. You should be able to provide specialist care to patients and give advice and information to patients/relatives/care staff, demonstrating an understanding of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the specialty.
Safeguarding and Governance
Applicants must have understanding/experience of the principles of safeguarding and knowledge of corporate and clinical governance. The ability to explain the requirement to balance clinical caseload and manage/prioritize your own workload autonomously is essential for success in this role.
