About the Role
Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated Dental Paediatric Consultant to join our team on a part-time, fixed-term basis. This exciting new opportunity offers the chance to provide specialized primary dental care to a diverse range of paediatric patients across Northamptonshire. The position is subject to the Terms and Conditions of service governing the appointment of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff in England and Wales.
Key Responsibilities
As a Dental Paediatric Consultant, you will play a crucial role in developing paediatric specialist clinical capacity and providing effective support, guidance, training, and workforce development opportunities for our clinical teams now and in the future. You will be responsible for supporting and further developing clinicians to demonstrate enhanced (Tier 2) skills in paediatric dentistry, enabling the service to develop in line with recommendations of relevant Commissioning Guidance for Paediatric Dentistry while offering high quality care for children.
Clinical Development
You will be actively involved in guiding the management of medically compromised children and adolescents in the community and will develop and improve essential local, regional and national links. In conjunction with other Specialists within and outside the service, you will help deliver, develop and enhance the provision of treatment under conscious sedation and general anaesthesia, ensuring the highest standards of patient care.
Service Improvement
The post holder will further develop emergency and urgent dental trauma management and treatment within Northamptonshire. You will contribute to planning and management of paediatric dental services for Northamptonshire, helping to deliver and secure commissioned service delivery. Additionally, you will lead on CPD provision within the service for paediatric general anaesthesia and conscious sedation.
Management and Leadership
The Consultant will be a highly regarded member of the service’s senior management team, working closely with the Dental Service Manager, Clinical Lead, Consultant in Special Care Dentistry, Clinical Team Lead and Dental Nurse Manager. Active involvement with the Paediatric Managed Clinical Network will be essential to ensure collaborative working and service development.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Experience in the multidisciplinary management of Paediatric patients is essential for this role. You should also have experience in Community Dental Services settings and demonstrate experience in the day to day clinical management of a Paediatric Dental Service. The job description has been approved by the Royal College, ensuring it meets professional standards.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, research relevant to Paediatric Dentistry would be considered advantageous for candidates applying for this position. This could include published papers, involvement in clinical trials, or other research activities that contribute to the advancement of paediatric dental care.
Required Behaviours and Values
You must demonstrate clarity in all communication with capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation. The ideal candidate will have the capacity to use logical and lateral thinking to solve problems and make effective decisions. You should be able to effectively supervise junior staff and other staff groups, leading, motivating and inspiring the team on a daily basis to provide high standards of care.
Terms and Conditions
This is a part-time position with a fixed-term contract of 2 years. The salary ranges from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications. The position is based at St James Dental Department in Northampton, with postcode NN5 5LQ. The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, requiring a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
