About the Role
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer this fantastic opportunity for a Senior Specialty Fellow in Foot and Ankle surgery. The position is ideal for a Senior Trainee who is developing a specialist interest in foot and ankle surgery, with an appointment intended for 6 months to 1 year. This role provides an excellent platform for professional development within one of England’s largest acute teaching Trusts.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will undertake a range of clinical and educational duties including:
- Regular Orthopaedic outpatient clinics at UHS Hospitals
- Operating sessions at UHS
- Supervising patient treatment within the Trust
- Carrying out regular ward rounds as appropriate
- Participation in clinical audit within the unit
- Active involvement in training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff
- Teaching medical and nursing students
- On-call duties as part of the middle grade on call rota
- Taking responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices
This is a provisional job plan that will be mutually agreed with the Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Director according to the training needs and interests of the Fellow.

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement
- FRCS (Tr and Orth)
- Previous training within Orthopaedics at Registrar level to at least year 4
Desirable:
- Higher Degree
- CCT
- ATLS

Essential:
- Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
- Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
- Verbal and written communication skills in English
- Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively

- Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
- Clear logical thinking showing an analytical scientific approach

Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must hold an MBBS or equivalent medical qualification and be registered with the GMC with a licence to practise. The ideal candidate will have completed FRCS (Tr and Orth) and have previous orthopaedic training at Registrar level to at least year 4. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to professional development and have a portfolio that demonstrates meeting criteria for progression in their specialty.
The Trust offers educational frameworks equivalent to training grade doctors, with a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported, with options available for study leave.
