Job Summary
We are seeking a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to join the North Durham Mental Health Team, a position offering a Certificate of Sponsorship for eligible international candidates. This replacement post provides an opportunity to work with our integrated Adult Mental Health Team serving adults aged 18 and above with mental illnesses. The team works in partnership with Durham County Council to provide statutory Care Act assessments alongside mental health assessments.
Work Environment
The team is based at Chester Le Street Health Centre, where patients are seen both at the base and in the local community. We cover the North Durham Area, Chester Le Street, Stanley, and Consett with 3 whole-time equivalent Consultants managing these regions. Our excellent working relationships with primary care and strong connections to the local community and voluntary sector create a supportive professional environment.
Caseload and Referrals
The team receives approximately 30 referrals per month, with 30-50% during term time for neurodevelopmental assessments (ASD and ADHD diagnostic assessments). Referrals come from urgent care (crisis/inpatients/liaison), transition patients from CAMHS, and new patients from primary care. The current caseload is 680 patients, though this is expected to reduce to 620 as we validate and move patients to neuro-waiting lists. Currently, there are no Ministry of Justice patients and 2 patients on Community Treatment Orders.
Clinical Responsibilities
As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide committed, proactive, and responsible leadership within the multidisciplinary team. Your responsibilities will include attending Daily Huddle meetings and daily decision-making sessions regarding patient care and management plans. You will undertake assessments for new patients, conduct follow-up reviews, provide diagnoses, and develop treatment plans based on evidence-based prescribing principles.
Specialized Duties
The role requires expertise in ensuring evidence-based prescribing and monitoring of pharmacological treatments and ECT. You will provide daily consultation and advice to the team and review patients as needed. As a Responsible Clinician for patients on Community Treatment Orders, you will comply with RC duties, complete necessary documentation, and renew RC approvals according to agreed procedures.
Additional Clinical Responsibilities
You will be responsible for Mental Health Act Assessments in the community and participate in the day on-call rota. The position requires providing appropriate supervision to postgraduate medical staff and non-medical prescribers within the team. You will also be expected to liaise with other community and in-patient teams and consultants, as well as participate in out-of-hours on-call rotations.
