Job Overview
We are seeking a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join our existing team of three Consultant Surgeons running the Congenital Cardiac Surgery service. This role is based in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) and University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). The appointee will provide inpatient and outpatient care for congenital cardiac patients, with responsibility for patients under their care within a multidisciplinary team structure. This position is particularly suited for early career consultant surgeons with full mentoring provided during the initial appointment period.

Location Details
The primary location for this position is Birmingham Children’s Hospital, situated at Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham, B4 6NH. The appointee will also have a sessional commitment to the University Hospital Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) in Edgbaston, which provides adult cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure therapies and cardiopulmonary transplantation for the West Midlands and Wales.
Salary and Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, paid according to the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff pay scheme. The role is a permanent, full-time position with the standard NHS benefits package, including pension scheme, generous annual leave, and access to continuing professional development opportunities.
Working Pattern and Contract Type
This is a permanent, full-time position working within the NHS. The post holder will participate in the consultant on-call rota in the department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery for acute care and resuscitation of patients within the Trust, including cannulation for Extra-corporeal life support with availability on site within 20 minutes. Job Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work collaboratively within the service to provide inpatient and outpatient care for congenital cardiac patients at both BWC and UHB. The appointee will have responsibility for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure. There is a sessional commitment to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for the provision of the Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery service.
Clinical Duties
As an appropriately trained specialist in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, you will assume a full clinical role in the stabilisation, investigation and clinical management of patients presenting with a broad spectrum of congenital heart disease. The role includes participation in the consultant on-call rota for acute care and resuscitation of patients, including cannulation for Extra-corporeal life support with availability on site within 20 minutes.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: Full GMC Registration, inclusion on Specialist Register for Cardiothoracic Surgery (or eligible within 6 months), and FRCS(Cth) or equivalent. Desirable: MD/PhD or MSc in a relevant submitted or awarded.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential: Completed training in Cardiothoracic surgery through a recognised program, competent in adult cardiothoracic surgery, and minimum of 2 years subspecialty training in congenital cardiac surgery. Desirable: Wide clinical experience in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery, experience in transplantation and extra-corporeal circulation, and evidence of active research and educational interest.
Analytical and Judgment Skills
Desirable: Recent experience of managing patients with complex cardiovascular physiology at consultant level, and practical experience of leading clinical audit/QIP projects with measurable outcomes.
Professional/Managerial Knowledge
Essential: Evidence of previous management and leadership tasks, participation in and leading medical teams, commitment to audit principles, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and commitment to continuing professional development. Desirable: Evidence of successful project development, experience in cardiac surgical skills labs, and high level IT skills.
