The Poultry Veterinarian will be responsible for maintaining the health and welfare of breeder and commercial poultry flocks through effective disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, vaccination, and biosecurity programmes.
The successful candidate will work closely with farm managers, production teams, hatchery personnel, and laboratory staff to ensure optimal flock performance and compliance with company standards.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor the health status of breeder and commercial poultry flocks across assigned farms.
Develop, implement, and review flock health and disease prevention programmes.
Diagnose poultry diseases through clinical examinations, post-mortem examinations, laboratory testing, and interpretation of diagnostic results.
Prescribe and administer appropriate treatments while ensuring compliance with veterinary regulations.
Design and supervise vaccination schedules and monitor vaccine effectiveness.
Investigate mortality trends and implement corrective actions.
Ensure strict implementation and continuous improvement of farm biosecurity protocols.
Promote responsible antimicrobial stewardship and monitor medication usage.
Collaborate with laboratory personnel on disease surveillance and diagnostic investigations, including ELISA, PCR, bacteriology, and serology.
Analyse flock performance data, including mortality, feed conversion, egg production, fertility, hatchability, and livability.
Provide technical guidance and training to farm managers, supervisors, and poultry attendants on flock health and disease prevention.
Respond promptly to disease outbreaks and coordinate containment and recovery efforts.
Liaise with regulatory authorities on disease surveillance, reporting, and compliance where necessary.
Maintain accurate veterinary records, treatment logs, vaccination records, and flock health reports.
Participate in farm audits, quality assurance programmes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Support breeder production, hatchery operations, and chick quality improvement programmes.
Keep abreast of emerging poultry diseases, vaccines, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from a recognised institution.
Registered with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) with a valid practising licence.
Membership of relevant professional associations will be an added advantage.
Experience:
Must have 4–5 years' post-qualification experience in commercial poultry production.
Practical experience managing breeder, broiler, or layer operations.
Proven experience in flock health management, disease diagnosis, vaccination programmes, and biosecurity implementation.
Hands-on experience with interpreting laboratory diagnostic results, particularly ELISA and PCR, will be an added advantage.
Required Competencies:
Strong knowledge of poultry diseases, pathology, and preventive medicine.
Excellent understanding of commercial poultry production systems.
Sound knowledge of poultry vaccination techniques and schedules.
Ability to interpret laboratory reports and make evidence-based recommendations.
