About West London NHS Trust
West London NHS Trust stands as one of the most diverse healthcare providers in the United Kingdom, delivering a comprehensive range of mental health and physical healthcare services alongside community support. The Trust operates with a commitment to excellence and innovation, serving patients across multiple boroughs with dedicated professional teams.
The Trust manages Broadmoor Hospital, one of only three high secure hospitals in the country, which has earned an international reputation for specialized psychiatric care. This high secure facility provides services to patients from across South of England while demonstrating the Trust’s specialized capabilities in complex mental healthcare.
Beyond high secure services, the Trust delivers low and medium secure services across eight London boroughs, ensuring comprehensive mental healthcare coverage throughout the region. Additionally, the Trust provides both mental and physical healthcare services to residents of three key London boroughs: Ealing, Hounslow, and Hammersmith & Fulham.
With a workforce of over 5,000 dedicated staff, the Trust demonstrates remarkable diversity, with 59% of employees coming from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) backgrounds. This diversity enriches the organization’s cultural competence and enables it to provide culturally sensitive healthcare services to London’s diverse population.
Financially robust, the Trust reports a turnover exceeding £500 million for the 2024-25 financial period, reflecting its significant operational scale and economic impact within the NHS system.
Quality and Reputation
The Trust has been rated as ‘Good’ overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England. This rating reflects the Trust’s commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care, safety, and service quality across its various facilities and services.
Notably, the Trust’s forensic services have achieved an ‘Outstanding’ rating from the CQC, highlighting exceptional performance in this specialized area of mental healthcare. This outstanding rating demonstrates the Trust’s leadership in providing secure, specialized psychiatric care that meets the highest national standards.
Strategic Integration
West London NHS Trust plays a pivotal role in the evolving North West London Integrated Care System and Integrated Care Board. As an established partner and contributor, the Trust actively participates in developing integrated healthcare solutions that improve coordination and efficiency across London’s healthcare landscape.
The Trust leads the NW London Children and Adolescent Mental Health provider collaborative, demonstrating its leadership in specialized mental healthcare services for young people. This collaborative approach ensures that children and adolescents receive coordinated, high-quality mental healthcare regardless of their location within North West London.
Position Overview
We are delighted to advertise a 1.0 whole-time equivalent (WTE) post at the Ealing Liaison Psychiatry service. This represents an excellent opportunity for a qualified consultant psychiatrist to join a dynamic and forward-thinking team dedicated to providing exceptional mental healthcare services.
The Ealing Liaison Psychiatry Service (ELPS) operates the Core-24 liaison psychiatry model, fully aligned with NHS England commissioning guidelines. This model ensures the service provides rapid and effective clinical input to patients across all inpatient wards and the Emergency Department at Ealing Hospital.
Importantly, ELPS serves patients over the age of 16 regardless of their address or GP location, ensuring accessibility and continuity of care for those in need. The service operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with out-of-hours medical cover provided through the on-call medical rota.
The service has established strong relationships with hospital clinicians and leaders, creating a collaborative environment that enhances patient care and service development. A particularly noteworthy aspect is the high-intensity user service, which is run jointly by LPS and ED consultants and includes a dedicated social prescriber, demonstrating the service’s integrated approach to complex patient needs.
Key Responsibilities
The post-holder will work in close partnership with the ELPS team manager and existing consultant psychiatrists to provide leadership to the liaison psychiatry team. This collaborative approach ensures effective team functioning and service delivery.
A key responsibility will be to ensure that Trust values and the ethos of the clinical leadership team are experienced and delivered by all team members. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in modeling and promoting the organization’s values and professional standards.
The post-holder will act as a Responsible Clinician and undertake Mental Health Act Assessments as required for patients under the care of the liaison team. This requires expertise in mental health legislation and assessment procedures.
Working collaboratively with services and colleagues in both mental health and acute trusts will be essential to provide integrated care for patients. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate excellent communication and partnership skills across organizational boundaries.
The post-holder will work with Imperial Healthcare senior clinicians and managers, LPS service manager and clinical lead in developing strategies, policies and guidelines for service delivery. This strategic contribution will shape the future direction of the service.
Training and Development
Providing a program of teaching and training to acute trust teams, ELPS colleagues, and medical students represents an important aspect of this role. The post-holder will contribute to the professional development of colleagues and the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Training within the team and for acute trust staff is a key priority for the service. The post-holder will be expected to work with the consultants in developing the team’s training program. This represents a strategic priority for both trusts, with progress monitored at board level.
Additional leadership and educational responsibilities within and external to the Trust will be encouraged and agreed on an individual basis through job planning. This flexibility allows for professional growth and development tailored to the successful candidate’s interests and expertise.
Service Development
The post-holder will undertake, lead and supervise service development projects, contributing to the continuous improvement of mental healthcare services at Ealing. This requires initiative, creativity, and a commitment to evidence-based practice.
As an active member of the LPS Senior Management Team (SMT), the post-holder will lead governance of the service. This responsibility includes ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and maintaining high standards of clinical governance.
Participating in clinical governance activities, including chairing investigations into serious incidents and complaints, and disseminating learning to the team, will be an important aspect of the role. This demonstrates the Trust’s commitment to learning from incidents and continuously improving care.
