About Abersychan Group Practice
Abersychan Group Practice is a well-established medical practice serving approximately 10,600 patients in the Abersychan area. With over 40 years of service to the community, we have built a strong reputation for providing high-quality general medical services. Due to the retirement of our senior partner after 30 years of dedicated service, we are now seeking to recruit up to 4 sessions per week from May 2026.
Location and Facilities
The practice is conveniently situated in Abersychan, located on the A4043 between Pontypool and Blaenavon. Our location offers excellent transport links, with easy access to Newport and the M4 motorway. We operate from purpose-built premises at two sites, providing modern and well-equipped facilities for our healthcare team and patients.
Our Team Structure
As of October 2025, our practice is supported by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals including seven GP Partners, two Salaried GPs, one GP Retainer, one Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP), four Practice Nurses, one Healthcare Assistant (HCA), two Phlebotomists, plus a team of Receptionists and Administrators. We are also proud to be a GP Trainee practice, currently hosting one GP in training alongside a Medical Student.

Position Overview
We are offering a permanent, part-time position for a General Practitioner with flexible working arrangements. The role involves working 4 sessions per week, with a competitive sessional rate of £11,000.00. While the post is due to start on 1st May 2026, we are happy to wait for the right candidate.
Clinical Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a caseload and dealing with a wide range of health needs in our primary care setting. Key responsibilities include undertaking surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, and checking and signing repeat prescriptions. You will make professional, autonomous decisions regarding patient care, whether self-referred or referred from other healthcare workers.
Patient Assessment and Care Planning
You will be expected to assess the healthcare needs of patients with both undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems, screening for disease risk factors and early signs of illness. Working in consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, you will develop comprehensive care plans for health and provide counselling and health education.
Prescribing Responsibilities
As a General Practitioner, you will be responsible for prescribing in accordance with locally and nationally agreed guidelines. You will compile and issue computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions, avoiding handwritten prescriptions whenever possible. All prescribing will be in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary or generically when clinically appropriate.

You will use personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines, maintain proper hand hygiene standards, and ensure the safe management of sharps use, storage, and disposal.

Person Specification – Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution and have full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC). Completion of Foundation Training or equivalent clinical experience is required, along with valid and current professional indemnity insurance.

Candidates must demonstrate an in-depth understanding of medical conditions, treatments, and patient care protocols. The ability to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions is essential, along with proficiency in using electronic medical records systems and other healthcare IT platforms.
Person Specification – Essential Skills
Strong decision-making, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills are required. Candidates should have knowledge of current clinical guidelines and standards, excellent communication skills with patients, families, and colleagues, and understanding of safeguarding protocols for vulnerable adults and children.
Person Specification – Additional Criteria
Eligibility to work in the UK is essential. A full, clean driving license may be required if the role involves home visits or travel. Candidates should possess a compassionate, empathetic, and patient-focused approach to care, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with patients and colleagues.
Person Specification – Desirable Qualities
While not essential, leadership qualities are desirable. Advanced knowledge in specific clinical areas such as elderly care, chronic disease management, or palliative care would be an advantage, as would expertise in health promotion and prevention strategies.
