Job Summary
The Pharmacy Technician will work as part of the practice and wider Primary Care Network (PCN) multidisciplinary team to support medicines optimisation, improve prescribing processes and help patients get the best outcomes from their medicines. The post holder will undertake patient-facing, technical and administrative medicines optimisation tasks, supporting safe, cost-effective prescribing and reducing medicines waste. This role includes supporting repeat prescribing processes, promoting electronic repeat dispensing, supporting medication reviews and medicines reconciliation, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives across the practice and PCN.
Main Duties of the Job
The Pharmacy Technician will work closely with the Clinical Pharmacist, GPs, community pharmacies and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive high quality, safe and effective care. Key responsibilities include:
- Undertaking patient-facing and supporting roles to ensure effective medicines use through shared decision-making
- Supporting medicines optimisation including inhaler technique checks, medicines reconciliation and medication reviews
- Preparing patients for Structured Medication Reviews by organising monitoring tests
- Supporting medicines reconciliation for care home patients and during transfers of care
- Promoting the use of EPS, eRD and online ordering
- Improving repeat prescribing processes and reducing medicines waste through effective ordering and returns
- Supporting antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing
- Supporting reception teams in appropriately streaming prescription requests
- Providing training to staff on safe and legal handling of medicines
- Working with the Clinical Pharmacist to manage shared care and complex medicines queries
- Developing working relationships with community pharmacies and other professionals
- Supporting implementation of national guidance, NICE guidance and local prescribing policies
- Contributing to QIPP, QOF, IIF and locally commissioned services
- Supporting quality improvement, CQC requirements and medicines audits
- Providing patients with lifestyle advice, public health information and signposting where required
Qualifications
Essential:
- Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- Meets the qualification and training requirements as specified by GPhC
- Evidence of continued professional development (CPD)
- Experience working as a qualified Pharmacy Technician in primary care, community or hospital pharmacy
- Experience supporting medicines optimisation and prescribing processes
- Experience working with patients, carers or in health/social care settings
Desirable:
- BTEC/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent
- Enrolled in or completed an approved training pathway such as PCPEP or MOCH
- Experience using GP clinical systems
- Understanding of current healthcare policy within Primary Care Networks

Key Responsibilities
The Pharmacy Technician’s core role responsibilities will cover clinical, technical and administrative categories. The purpose of the role is to lead improvements to maximise safe, cost-effective best practice in prescribing to improve the quality of patient care. The post holder will help patients to get the best from their medicines by switching medications to agreed and approved protocols, improving repeat prescribing processes in General Practice, including promotion of repeat dispensing and online ordering, minimising clinical risk and aiming to reduce wasted medicines.
Clinical Responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities include undertaking patient facing and patient supporting roles to ensure effective medicines use, through shared decision-making conversations with patients. You will carry out medicines optimisation tasks including effective medicine administration (e.g. checking inhaler technique), supporting medication reviews and medicines reconciliation. Where required, you will utilise consultation skills to work in partnership with patients to ensure they use their medicines effectively.
Technical and Administrative Responsibilities
Technical and administrative responsibilities include supporting the Practice & PCN multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient medicines optimisation processes are being followed. You will implement efficient ordering and return processes and reducing medication wastage. You will provide training and support on the legal, safe and secure handling of medicines, including the implementation of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). You will also promote Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) and online ordering.
