About the Role
Due to a resignation of the previous postholder, Airedale NHS Foundation Trust is currently advertising for a Substantive Consultant Anaesthetist. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified anaesthetists seeking to work in a well-respected NHS hospital in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The post is for 10 programmed activities per week, with the post holder expected to participate in a 1:10 on-call rota. A comprehensive breakdown of the draft job plan is included in the information pack provided to candidates.
The position offers the chance to work in a small, ACSA accredited department within an award-winning hospital. The department has recently received recognition for its excellence in team communication, simulation training, and Specialty Doctor career development.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team of Consultants and contribute to the ongoing development of the Department of Anaesthesia at Airedale Hospital. This includes providing high-quality anaesthetic care across a range of specialties.
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK. Alternatively, they must be an associate specialist within the UK able to demonstrate ability to work at consultant level via CV and interview.
The initial job plan is for 10 programmed activities with the opportunity for additional activities up to 12 in total. Time is allocated within job plans for additional responsibilities beyond SPA time, and professional leave is available for additional responsibilities alongside study leave.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold MBBS or equivalent qualification, GMC Registration, and FRCA or FFARCS or equivalent qualifications. These are fundamental requirements for practicing as a consultant anaesthetist in the UK.
Desirable Qualifications
Additional qualifications that would strengthen an application include higher academic qualifications such as ATLS, ALS, APLS, or PALS. Experience with recognized management courses, intermediate/advanced level ICM or Obstetrics, and teaching qualifications are also considered advantageous.
Essential Experience
Candidates must demonstrate wide general experience of anaesthesia including perioperative medicine and obstetrics. The ability to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on-call rota is essential, along with evidence of clear and lucid written skills.
Applicants should have experience of teaching and supervision of postgraduate trainees, as well as experience working effectively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Desirable Experience
Management and leadership experience is desirable, as is experience with Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing and IT skills. These additional competencies would enhance the candidate’s ability to contribute to the department’s development.
Essential Attributes
Applicants must demonstrate the ability and willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level. Evidence of involvement in quality improvement initiatives is also essential.
Desirable Attributes
Attendance at “training the trainers” courses, assessment and appraisal courses, and presentations at regional or national conferences are considered desirable attributes that would strengthen an application.
