About the Role
We provide a 24/7 consultant of the week service for emergency colorectal and general surgery patients, elective colorectal operating lists, outpatient treatments and clinics. The successful candidate will join 6 other Colorectal consultants and 1 SAS doctor to deliver both elective and emergency colorectal and general surgery services.
Key Responsibilities
The role offers opportunities to develop sub-specialist interests that complement our current services. For those interested in leadership and management, the Trust offers development and training opportunities. We will work with you to shape your job plan upon successful appointment, reviewing it after three months and then annually to ensure the perfect fit.
Team and Resources
We have a strong composite workforce made up of Surgical ACP’s, Physician Assistants and Doctors Assistants, supporting our SDEC and ward areas, as well as clinics and endoscopy. We also have a team of Nurse Specialists covering the needs of the service. A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are available including Endoscopy, CT, MRI and interventional radiology.

Essential Qualifications
Valid Full Registration with the General Medical Council is essential for this position. Applicants must also hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent qualification.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to offer expert opinion on clinical specialist problems in Urology Surgery, sound wide-based knowledge of Urology surgical conditions, and the ability to take full and independent responsibility for urology surgical patients.
Desirable Qualifications
A proven track record in undertaking research projects is desirable for this position. Other desirable qualifications include other relevant medical and non-medical training/degrees, MD or PhD degrees, and other relevant postgraduate qualifications.
Essential Experience
A high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of the breadth of common urological surgical conditions is essential. Applicants must demonstrate adequate surgical experience of index colorectal surgical procedures and operations, as well as experience of training and supervising junior medical staff and students.
Leadership and Management
Evidence of participation in clinical audit is essential, along with the ability to lead a surgical team. Commitment to continuing medical education, appraisal and clinical governance is also required.
Teaching Experience
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience is essential. The ability to critically appraise research and apply research outcomes to clinical problems, as well as the ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects, are also required.
Personal Qualities
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, excellent communication skills, an enquiring and critical approach to work, and the ability to organise workload efficiently. Demonstrating empathy to patients, coping well in stressful work situations, and working with enthusiasm and showing initiative are also essential.
