Job Summary
The Welding Supervisor oversees all welding activities, ensuring they meet project specifications, international codes (ASME, AWS), and Nigerian quality standards. They manage resources, productivity, and quality control of the welding team.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise daily welding activities and allocate tasks to foremen and welders.
Ensure all welding is performed according to approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications).
Monitor welder performance and qualification (WPQ) validity.
Coordinate with QC Inspectors for NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) and visual inspections.
Manage welding consumables (electrodes, filler wires) storage and issuance (baking/holding ovens).
Resolve technical welding issues on site.
Ensure compliance with HSE regulations regarding welding fumes, radiation, and electrical safety.
Prepare daily progress reports and weld maps.
Mentor and train local welders to meet NCDMB targets.
Required Qualifications
HND or B.Sc. in Mechanical/Metallurgical Engineering.
Alternatively, extensive trade background with City & Guilds/NABTEB.
Professional Certifications & Licenses
CSWIP 3.1 or 3.2 Welding Inspector or AWS CWI.
COREN registration (for Engineers).
Experience Requirements
Minimum 8-10 years in welding fabrication/construction.
At least 3 years in a supervisory role.
Technical Skills & Competencies
Expert knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW).
Ability to read isometric drawings and welding symbols.
Knowledge of metallurgy and heat treatment (PWHT).
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Weld Repair Rate (< 2% or as per project KPI).
Schedule adherence for fabrication milestones.
Consumable wastage (< 5%).
Safety compliance of the welding crew.
Working Conditions
Construction site/Fabrication yard.
Exposure to high noise, heat, and UV radiation.
Physical Requirements
Ability to inspect welds in difficult-to-access areas.
