About Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), opened in 2010, provides both secondary and tertiary care services, including the NHS England commissioned Severe Intestinal Failure Unit. The hospital features a well-equipped, modern endoscopy unit with a separate dedicated in-patient endoscopy suite. QEHB cares for severe intestinal failure, surgery, and home parenteral nutrition (HPN), serving a population of 3.5 million with currently 140 patients on HPN.
Key Responsibilities
As a consultant gastroenterologist, you will join an existing team of 13 consultant gastroenterologists and a Nutrition Support Team comprising 3 consultants and a diverse allied health professional team. Your key responsibilities will include providing Intestinal Failure, HPN, complex enteral nutrition, and gastroenterology/endoscopy services. You will share responsibility for gastroenterology in-patients on a consultant of the week model and participate in the GI bleed rota.
Clinical Duties
Your clinical responsibilities will include delivering in-patient parenteral nutrition ward rounds 2-3 times per week, managing an average of 2-3 endoscopy sessions per week, and conducting 2-3 outpatient clinics weekly. These clinics will cover intestinal failure, complex enteral nutrition, and general gastroenterology. You will also participate in the acute gastroenterology ward rota, elective weekend endoscopy/clinics, and the emergency GI Bleed service.
Professional Development
The trust is committed to supporting your professional development. You will be expected to participate in regular quality improvement projects, clinical audits, and lead agreed audits to ensure clinical services are efficiently administered. We provide time and financial support for continuing professional development as required by the Royal College of Physicians.

Essential Qualifications
- Must be entered on the GMC Register
- Possession of MRCP or equivalent qualification
- Eligible for inclusion on the GMC specialist register in gastroenterology & general medicine, or within 6 months of achieving CCT
Essential Experience
Essential experience includes being entered on the GMC Register. While previous intestinal failure experience is not required, you must demonstrate a strong desire to develop skills in clinical nutrition and intestinal failure.
