About the Role
As a Consultant in CAMHS – Inpatient, you will provide clinical leadership for Sowenna, a 14-bed Tier 4 CAMHS inpatient unit for young people aged 13-18. The service is QNIC-accredited and provides trauma-informed, relational care within a bio-psycho-social and Care Programme Approach (CPA) framework. This role offers an excellent opportunity for career development while contributing to high-quality care for young people.

The county provides a welcoming environment for families and individuals seeking a better work-life balance. Cornwall’s mild climate, outdoor activities, and strong community spirit make it an attractive destination for professionals relocating to the UK.
Competitive Compensation Package
We offer a highly competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, plus an additional 3% on-call allowance. This generous package reflects the seniority of the role and the high level of expertise required. The salary is structured according to the national Consultant pay scales, with opportunities for progression based on performance and experience.
Flexible Working Options
We recognize the importance of work-life balance and offer flexible working arrangements including full-time, part-time, job share, and flexible working patterns. This allows you to tailor your working hours to suit your personal circumstances while maintaining the high standards of patient care expected at our Trust.
Key Responsibilities
The role involves providing clinical leadership for the multidisciplinary team at Sowenna, undertaking comprehensive psychiatric assessments, formulation, diagnosis, and care planning in line with CPA and bio-psycho-social models. You will chair admission CPA meetings and regular MDT reviews, working collaboratively with nursing, psychology, family therapy, OT, social work, and specialty doctors.
Leadership and Development Opportunities
As part of the service leadership team, you will have opportunities to contribute to strategic service development alongside the Service Manager and senior CAMHS leadership. The role includes supporting medical trainees and advanced clinical practitioners through supervision, providing specialist psychiatric advice to the MDT, and joining therapy sessions in complex cases where appropriate.
Professional Development
We strongly support Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and offer numerous opportunities for research, teaching, and service development. The Trust is committed to helping you grow your career and maintain your professional registration. You will have access to training programs, conferences, and educational resources to support your ongoing development.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must have experience of assessing and treating young patients and families in acute and community psychiatric settings, with the ability to offer expert opinion on a range of problems in child and adolescent psychiatry. You should demonstrate excellent clinical assessment skills and the ability to manage risk effectively in complex cases.
Essential Experience
Candidates must hold CCT or equivalent in CAMHS, with substantial experience of managing a busy caseload of clients with a range of mental health problems. Evidence of working within a community mental health setting is also required. This experience demonstrates your ability to function effectively in the UK’s healthcare system.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, awareness of community structures and social care options and processes would be advantageous. Understanding of recovery principles in mental health and participation in user involvement in services are also considered beneficial for this role.
Professional Registration
Applicants must hold current GMC specialist registration (or be within 6 months of CCT). Ideally, you should have Approved Clinician/Section 12 status or be willing to achieve this. The Trust is also open to discussing opportunities for individuals not yet on the specialist register, subject to appropriate supervision arrangements.
