Applications are invited for a full-time substantive Specialist in Fetal and Maternal Medicine Consultant position at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL). As a surgical, cardiac, and genetic referral centre, UHL delivers specialist multidisciplinary care for pregnancies complicated by fetal or maternal medical conditions, as well as for women at high risk of massive haemorrhage. Job Location
The position is based at LRI/LGH (Leicester Royal Infirmary/Glenfield Hospital) located on Aylestone Road in Leicester, with postcode LE15WW. The successful candidate will be expected to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital, as this is a requirement for the role.
Salary and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, dependent on experience. This is a permanent, full-time position within the hospital medical and dental staff pay scheme. Key Responsibilities
The department is looking for a dynamic and energetic Obstetrician with subspecialty training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine to join the Fetal and Maternal Medicine Team. The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive tertiary level service to patients at UHL, including offering expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in high-risk Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine.
Clinical Duties
The main clinical responsibilities include providing tertiary level fetal medicine service at UHL, supporting the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC) fetal cardiac service, and supporting the Fetal Medicine service in Kettering. The candidate will also contribute to Maternal Medicine clinics at LRI and LGH, participate in the Maternity Assessment Units, and join the obstetric on-call rota as directed by the Head of Service for Obstetrics.
Training and Development
The successful candidate will be expected to supervise and train junior medical staff, perform elective obstetric lists and ward rounds, provide prospective cover for these activities, and undertake sessions on the Delivery Suite. They will participate in the “hot week” delivery suite cover, working closely with midwifery and colleagues to create a supportive atmosphere.
Administrative and Research Responsibilities
The role involves taking part in multidisciplinary case discussions and care planning, engaging in teaching activities, complaint and incident management, and administration duties. The candidate will be involved in appraising and assessing junior staff, contributing to ongoing research activities at UHL, and participating in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold MB BS or equivalent, full GMC Registration, MRCOG or appropriate specialist registration, and relevant CCT or equivalent (with ‘equivalence’ confirmed by GMC by date of AAC). Sub-speciality training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine or eligibility for such training is also essential.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations and a higher degree such as MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent would be advantageous. These additional qualifications demonstrate a commitment to professional development and academic excellence in the field.
Clinical Skills and Experience
The successful candidate must be fully trained in Obstetrics & Gynaecology with appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems. They should demonstrate clear, logical thinking/analytical approach and understand evidence-based practice. IT skills including the ability to use web browsers, Excel, Word, and other relevant software are also essential.
Essential Job-Related Skills
Applicants must be able to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in high-risk Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine. Experience in the management and counselling of patients referred with fetal anomalies at a tertiary level is required. The ability to carry out invasive procedures and participate in the on-call rota is essential, along with active involvement in audits and research activities.
Communication Skills
Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues are essential. Candidates must be empathic and sensitive, with the capacity to take others’ perspectives and treat others with understanding. Highly developed emotional intelligence is also required for this demanding clinical role.
