Job Overview
St Andrew’s Healthcare is seeking two Consultant Psychiatrists to join our Medium Secure Service in Northampton. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a specialist male medium secure ward that provides care and treatment for working age males with mental illnesses. The new ward will form part of our established and successful medium secure male service, and you will play a crucial role in ensuring seamless pathways between wards and services as patients progress through treatment and recovery.
About St Andrew’s Healthcare
St Andrew’s is a not-for-profit Charity with no shareholders – any surplus we generate is reinvested directly into our services. We are part of the Specialist Provider Collaboratives in the East and West Midlands and a member of the East Midlands Alliance. Our Northampton campus spans 150 plus acres of woodland greenery and houses five distinct Divisions: Medium Secure, Low Secure and Specialist Rehabilitation, Learning Disability and Autism, Neuropsychiatry and CAMHS.
Our Unique Services
We offer several unique specialist national services including our Deaf Forensic Service, Huntington’s Service, Secure Brain Injury Service, Older Adults Secure Services, Blended Women’s Service (one of only 3 National Pilots), and a specialist inpatient DBT service. This diversity of services provides an exceptional environment for professional development and career advancement.
The Role
As a Consultant Psychiatrist within our Medium Secure Service, you will serve as the Responsible Clinician for our specialist medium service. You will lead a multi-disciplinary team and oversee the management of patients with often complex needs. This position offers significant scope to promote innovation and improvement of services while developing your specialist interests and growing your professional remit and responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
You will be actively encouraged to become a leader nationally in mental health and influence the future direction of services. The role provides substantial autonomy to make decisions that will directly improve patient care and outcomes. You’ll have the opportunity to work with an innovative and dynamic team, develop and deliver up-to-date treatments, and work in a supportive environment that values both personal and professional growth.
Professional Development
The post-holder will be able to undertake non-clinical activities of interest including research, teaching, governance and management in an innovative way. You’ll have the opportunity to influence the direction of services to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients while advancing your own career.
Support and Resources
You will have an office space and the support of an associate specialist as ward doctor, plus a full multi-disciplinary team including Clinical Administrators and Personal Assistants dedicated to your wards and service. We provide comprehensive resources to support your professional development and ensure you can deliver high-quality patient care.
Benefits Package
We offer a competitive benefits package including travel allowance, pension scheme, 33 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, free parking, and a sickness policy on par with the NHS. Additional benefits include secretarial support and various professional development opportunities.
Study and Career Progression
Each Consultant receives an individual study budget of £1,000 per year. We have sponsored many of our doctors to undertake MBA degrees and actively support career progression. Most of our senior medical managers started as Consultants within the charity, demonstrating our commitment to internal development.
Working Arrangements
We offer flexible working patterns including full-time, part-time, job share, flexible working, home or remote working options, and compressed hours. This role is suitable for an experienced Consultant or someone due to complete their CCT in the next 6 months.
Call Requirements
The position features infrequent non-resident second on calls with 24-hour first on call cover, providing a better work-life balance compared to many similar roles in the sector.
Professional Community
You’ll join a community of Consultants based on one site with a weekly multidisciplinary CPD and Grand Rounds programme that includes colleagues from the NHS. Only 10% of our Consultant Psychiatrist roles are occupied by locums, indicating high satisfaction and stability among our permanent staff.
International Medical Graduates
We warmly welcome applications from job seekers who require current Skilled Worker sponsorship to work in the UK. International candidates will be considered alongside all other applications. Please contact slpendry@stah.org if you would like more details about how we can support your relocation to the UK.
Additional Opportunities
We offer opportunities for joint roles with the NHS in some areas, teaching opportunities for medical students from Cambridge and Buckingham as well as trainees, and research opportunities with our Research and Innovation Team. Our facilities feature class-leading analytics and data monitoring with extensive integration with our Electronic Records system and Electronic Prescribing on all wards.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must hold GMC Registration and must have MRCPsych or equivalent qualifications. The position requires current UK professional registration, which must be maintained throughout employment.
Disclosure and Barring Service
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and a submission for Disclosure will be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
