Role Overview
The Paediatric Advanced Practitioner (AP) will play a critical role in providing expert clinical care to children and young people presenting with urgent and emergency conditions. Working within our multidisciplinary team, you will deliver high-quality, evidence-based care, offering advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients within the Paediatric Emergency Department.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will function as an independent advanced practitioner in our busy Children’s Emergency Department. You will undertake complete episodes of care for paediatric patients, from initial consultation through examination, investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and/or referral. You may be asked to assist with paediatric cases in resuscitation or see and treat minor injuries, working in conjunction with Senior Decision Makers or the hospital paediatric team as appropriate.
Advanced Clinical Practice Framework
As defined by NHS England (2025), advanced practice is characterized by a high degree of autonomy and designated responsibility for complex decision making. This role is underpinned by a post-registration masters level award and encompasses four pillars of clinical practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research. You will manage care in partnership with individuals, families, and carers, analyzing complex problems and managing clinical risk across various settings.
Clinical Practice Requirements
The clinical practice pillar accounts for a minimum of 80% of your contracted hours. You will practice with a higher level of responsibility and autonomy comparable to medical staff at the same level. Your responsibilities will include practicing as an exemplary role model, utilizing advanced knowledge and judgment for complex decision making, completing holistic health assessments, requesting imaging and investigations, making independent diagnostic decisions, and initiating prescribed treatments and therapies.
Leadership and Management Responsibilities
In addition to clinical duties, you will utilize your non-clinical time to contribute to leadership and management activities. This includes risk management using professional judgment, collaborative working with multidisciplinary team members, and providing clear clinical leadership across the clinical area and trust when necessary. You will demonstrate commitment to innovation and governance through education and research.
Research and Education Commitment
As an Advanced Practitioner, you have a professional responsibility to yourself and the trust to fully utilize your remaining non-clinical time for education and research activities. You will promote best practices, encourage innovation, and challenge the need for change. Additionally, you will provide quality education to multidisciplinary team members within your specialty and the wider trust.
Person Specification – Essential Requirements
Applicants must hold current NMC Registration and have completed a Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice (including prescribing). You should have experience in paediatric assessment or have completed a paediatric health assessment course. We require candidates who are willing to work towards the Paediatric & Child Health Advanced Practice Area Specific Capability & Curriculum Framework (PCHCF) or RCEM Paediatric ACP Accreditation.
Experience Requirements
You must have a minimum of 5 years post-registration experience, including experience in acute/emergency settings. This experience should demonstrate your ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment and manage complex cases independently. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of providing high-quality care to children and young people in emergency settings.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, accreditation with the Centre for Advancing Practice would be considered advantageous. This additional qualification demonstrates your commitment to maintaining high standards in advanced clinical practice and professional development.
Working Arrangements
This is a full-time, permanent position based at Royal Stoke University Hospital. The hospital offers excellent facilities and a supportive working environment. You will work as part of a dedicated team of healthcare professionals committed to providing exceptional care to our patients.

We offer comprehensive support for professional development, including opportunities to work towards specialist paediatric accreditations.
