About the Role
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is seeking a motivated individual to join our tertiary plastic surgery breast reconstruction unit. This position offers exposure to all aspects of breast reconstruction including a busy microsurgical service performing approximately 80 free flap reconstructions annually. The fellow will have opportunities to work within our on-site breast unit, gaining experience in breast oncology and oncoplastic techniques.
Position Details
This is a fixed-term position for 6 months, with potential for extension pending funding approval and satisfactory performance. The role combines training, research, educational input, and service delivery within the specialty. While not a recognized UK training post, the successful candidate will have a named supervisor and access to educational opportunities to support career progression.
Key Responsibilities
The main duties of this Senior Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction Fellow include:
- Providing care and management of patients with acute and chronic conditions, including complex cases
- Referring patients to other specialties as appropriate
- Participating in outpatient activities and clinics
- Involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multi-disciplinary teams and meetings
- Performing relevant administrative duties
- Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians
- Active involvement in audit and clinical governance activities
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
- Full GMC Registration with license to practice
- Medical Degree from a recognized medical school
- MRCS or equivalent qualification
- Successful completion of post-registration training
- FRCS Plast or equivalent qualification
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Minimum experience equivalent to ST8 in Plastic Surgery (10 years full-time post-graduate training)
- Proven experience in an acute hospital setting
- Knowledge and experience in managing critically ill patients
- At least 6 months of recent NHS experience
- Evidence of interest in audit and research
- Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving
- Possesses good communication skills
