The Ealing Liaison Psychiatry Service
We are delighted to be advertising a 1.0 whole-time equivalent (WTE) Consultant position within the Ealing Liaison Psychiatry Service (ELPS). This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified psychiatrist to join a dynamic service that operates the Core-24 liaison psychiatry model in line with NHS England commissioning guidelines.
The ELPS provides rapid and effective input to patients across all inpatient wards and Emergency Departments in Ealing. We accept patients over the age of 16 regardless of their address or GP location, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Out-of-hours medical cover is provided through an on-call medical rota, and we maintain excellent relationships with hospital clinicians and leaders.
Our high-intensity user service is run jointly by LPS and ED consultants and includes a dedicated social prescriber. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the ELPS team manager and existing consultant psychiatrists to provide leadership and clinical expertise to the liaison psychiatry team, delivering a responsive and high-quality service.
Key Responsibilities
As a Consultant within our service, you will be pivotal to the ethos of the team and will play a crucial role in further integrating the liaison psychiatry service with both the acute and mental health trusts’ services. Your leadership will help shape the future direction of mental healthcare provision in Ealing.
Specific responsibilities include working in close partnership with the team manager and other consultants to provide leadership to the liaison psychiatry team, ensuring that Trust values and the ethos of the clinical leadership team are experienced and delivered by all team members.
You will act as a Responsible Clinician and undertake Mental Health Act Assessments as required for patients under the care of the liaison team. You will also work collaboratively with services and colleagues in both mental health and acute trusts to provide integrated care for patients across all settings.
The post-holder will work closely with Imperial Healthcare senior clinicians and managers, the LPS service manager and clinical lead in developing strategies, policies, and guidelines for service delivery. You will be responsible for providing programs of teaching and training to acute trust teams, ELPS colleagues, and medical students.
Additional responsibilities include undertaking, leading, and supervising service development projects; being an active member of the LPS Senior Management Team (SMT), leading governance of the service; and participating in clinical governance activities including chairing investigations into serious incidents and complaints.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. You must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
Desirable: A qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management. Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) is also desirable.
Eligibility
Essential: You must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of expected completion of specialist training. You must also have MHA AC status (or within 3 months of starting) and Section 12(2) Approval, and be in good standing with the GMC with respect to any warnings or conditions on practice.
Academic Skills and Lifelong Learning
Essential: Experience in under- and post-graduate teaching, ability to work in and lead teams, and capacity to manage clinical complexity. You should have understanding and experience in clinical governance and how it underpins care, along with research or service evaluation experience.
You must be able to use and appraise clinical evidence, demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to developing liaison psychiatry services, and show empathy through self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
Desirable: Excellence in education, research, or Quality Improvement (QI), along with evidence of improving outcomes through service change or audit.
Clinical Knowledge
Essential: Experience of liaison psychiatry with excellent knowledge of the specialty, and ability to meet duties under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA).
Desirable: A wide range of specialist experience relevant to the post in the NHS or comparable service.
Training and Development
Training within the team and for acute trust staff is a key priority for our service. The post-holder will be expected to work with the consultants in developing the team’s training program. This is a strategic priority for both trusts, monitored at board level.

Additional Requirements
Essential: Commitment to and compliance with Trust values and policies. The successful candidate will be expected to adhere to all professional standards and guidelines set by the GMC and other relevant regulatory bodies.
Desirable: Mobility and ability to travel to Trust sites as required. While the primary base will be Ealing Hospital, there may be occasional requirements to attend meetings or provide services at other Trust locations.

Terms and Conditions
This is a permanent, full-time position with a salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff as determined by the NHS.
You will be entitled to 27 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave. The Trust also offers a generous pension scheme through the NHS Pension Scheme, which is one of the most comprehensive in the UK.
