Job Details
Company: Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Location: Dorset County Hospital, Williams Avenue, Dorchester, DT1 2JY
Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum
Schedule: Full-time
Employment Type: Permanent
Language: English
Application Deadline: 05 April 2026
About the Position
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join our hardworking and dedicated team at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting time of change and improvement, and the successful applicant will become part of a team of Consultants with a maximum 1 in 8 on call frequency.
The Emergency Department currently manages approximately 55,000 patients per year, and our footprint doubled in size at the onset of the pandemic. We were awarded £15m to refurbish the enlarged department to a very high standard, and this work was completed in 2022.
In addition, we have funding for a £100m newbuild ED and ICU. Building work on this is actively ongoing, and we expect the new department to open in 2027. This, combined with our current footprint, will form an ‘Emergency Zone’ to bring specialty teams and SDEC near to the front door. There will be a dedicated area in the ED for paediatrics, and the hospital is also looking to develop its own onsite UTC (urgent treatment centre).
Department Structure
Our Emergency Department is supported by a dedicated team of 12 WTE middle grade doctors, including 2 HSTs, and 18 Resident doctors. Additionally, we have 8 ANPs/ACPs (Advanced Nurse Practitioners/Advanced Clinical Practitioners) providing specialized care.
The nursing team is led by 1 Matron, 4 Clinical Band 7s, and 12 Band 6s, creating a well-structured and supportive environment for both staff and patients. This comprehensive staffing model ensures we can provide excellent care across all acuity levels.
Main Duties
The department is proactive in the management of critical illness and major trauma, which is consultant-led. The EM Consultants currently support the 24/7 stroke thrombolysis rota with Physician colleagues. Primary PCI is offered by our cardiologists in hours as part of the pan Dorset Network Service.
Dorset County is a trauma unit in the Wessex Major Trauma Network. Due to our geographical location, ambulance services often cannot bypass our unit in favor of the Major Trauma Centre. The onsite helipad regularly receives patients from the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance and the HM Coastguard Search & Rescue Service (although this is currently in a secondary landing site during the ongoing building works).
Professional Development
The successful candidate will be expected to provide excellent clinical leadership as well as deliver an excellent standard of direct clinical care. Teaching and training are delivered both within the department and in a dedicated Education Centre which has its own sim-suite.
We actively encourage all staff to participate in audit, research and teaching activities. This commitment to professional development ensures our team remains at the forefront of emergency medicine practices and contributes to the advancement of the specialty.
Person Requirements
Applicants must have evidence of management experience, as this is essential for the role. You should demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance and provide evidence of participation in recent relevant audit activities.
We require evidence of recent collaborative working in a service development or improvement project, showing your ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient care and service delivery.
Applicants must be willing and able to fulfil the general service elements of the job description and provide evidence of the clinical skills required to fulfill the specialty and sub-specialty elements as outlined in the technical specification.
Qualifications and Experience
You must have evidence of the ability to manage the demands of being a DGH based consultant in Emergency Medicine, along with demonstrable experience of working within the NHS or equivalent healthcare system.
Essential qualifications include full GMC Registration with entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or through CESAR or European Community Rights. You should also hold an appropriate higher surgical/medical qualification, specifically FRCEM or equivalent.
All applicants must provide evidence of teaching experience, as education is a key component of this role and vital for the development of junior medical staff and the wider department.
