Role Details
The successful candidate will play a key role in clinical leadership, education, safeguarding, service development, and multidisciplinary collaboration with the paediatric team. Key Responsibilities
The post holder will provide consultant-delivered Paediatric Emergency Medicine within the Emergency Department, including reception, resuscitation, diagnosis, and initial management of paediatric emergencies. You will lead and further develop Paediatric Emergency Medicine services within the ED and act as both Paediatric Emergency Medicine clinical lead and ED safeguarding/child protection lead.
Clinical Leadership
You will ensure high standards of safe, timely, and compassionate care for children and young people while providing clinical leadership and supervision to junior doctors, ACPs, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team. The post holder will coordinate and deliver paediatric resuscitation teaching and courses (e.g. APLS/EPLS) and work closely with paediatric medical, surgical, orthopaedic, anaesthetic, and critical care teams across the Trust and regional network.
Teaching and Development
Support and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including University of Buckingham medical students. You will participate in audit, quality improvement, governance, appraisal, and revalidation processes. The post holder may participate in the consultant on-call rota, delivered through annualised self-rostering, with the current weekend frequency being 1 in 6.
Job Plan and Schedule
The position offers a 10 PA (Programme of Activities) total consisting of 7.5 DCC (Direct Clinical Care) and 2.5 SPA (Specialist, Professional, and Academic) time. SPA time includes core professional activities and agreed non-core SPA, which may include Paediatric Emergency Medicine leadership, safeguarding, education and supervision, research and quality improvement, and clinical leadership development.

Qualifications and Requirements
Essential qualifications include a medical degree, FRCEM or equivalent, and will be required to maintain full registration with the General Medical Council. Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT. Advanced Life Support (Adult & Paediatric) as well as Advanced Trauma Life Support Provider or equivalent certification is also required.
Experience Requirements
Minimum seven years’ postgraduate experience is required, including higher medical training – five years as a Specialist Registrar/Trainee. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential. Recent experience in Emergency Medicine in the UK is essential. desirable qualifications include accreditation in education, instructor status in ALS, EPLS, and/or ATLS, and other tertiary qualifications including Education.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
Candidates must demonstrate knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based practice and have excellent clinical knowledge in emergency medicine. Essential clinical skills include experience in leading the multi-disciplinary management of Emergency patients and understanding of clinical risk management.
Communication and Leadership
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, along with compassionate communication with patients, colleagues, and staff at all levels. Candidates must be committed to working in a multi-disciplinary team to improve care for patients and have the ability to appraise and supervise trainees and other staff members.
Additional Requirements
The ability to work independently as well as part of the Emergency Directorate is essential, along with the capability to balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole. Candidates must have the ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients, demonstrate commitment to developing new services, and show ability and desire to take part in Clinical Directorate management.
