Job Summary
United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Consultant General Haematologist with Special Interest in Lymphoma to join our dedicated team. This is a 10 programmed activities (PA) position, based primarily at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, with additional responsibilities including one day per week of travel to Grantham as part of our Trust-wide service delivery. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to develop both clinical and laboratory Haematology services across the Trust.

Location and Facilities
The post is primarily based at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, which is part of United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Our Haematology service provides comprehensive outpatient clinics and shares an 18-bed ward with Oncology, delivering Level 2A care. In addition, we have a dedicated 18-station Chemotherapy suite for outpatients and day cases, staffed by a Senior Chemotherapy Trained Nurse permanently attached to the suite with other staff rotating.
Support Structure
You will be joining a well-supported department with a team of 4 x Specialty Doctors, 2 x FY2 doctors, 1x FY1 doctor, and a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). Pilgrim Hospital has a strong identity underpinned by a philosophy of personal care to patients and staff. The unit has well-developed clinical audit and quality assurance programmes, and we actively encourage our medical community to participate in management at all levels.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to provide a comprehensive service for Haematology to the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Key responsibilities include participating in a consultant rota for emergency duties (currently 1:11 on weekdays / 1:12 on weekends), providing cover for colleagues during periods of annual or study leave, carrying out teaching duties as required, and taking an active part in Postgraduate and Undergraduate Medical Education programmes.
Clinical Duties
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for in- and out-patients in their care and for the proper functioning of the department. You will be required to attend department meetings regularly, participate in East Midlands Cancer Alliance and multi-disciplinary team meetings, take part in the clinical governance programme, be involved in research where appropriate, and actively participate in the management of services within the Care Group.
Service Overview
The Haematology Department provides a comprehensive service comprising all Haemato-Oncology, General Haematology, and Haemostasis and Thrombosis referrals for investigation, diagnosis and treatment. We also provide additional responsibility for investigation and advice on the management of patients with Haematological problems from all other areas. All bone marrow aspirates and trephines are reported by the HMDS Nottingham.
Treatment Facilities
Inpatient Chemotherapy is administered at Pilgrim Hospital and Lincoln County Hospital, while outpatient services are provided at all three sites, including Grantham. The Trust’s Cancer Services are part of the East Midlands Cancer Alliance. Intensive chemotherapy for acute Leukaemia and other patients is only provided in Lincoln. All Lymphoma patients are managed by our Haematologists, with radiotherapy patients managed by Consultant Clinical Oncologists who form part of the Lymphoma and Myeloma MDT.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must hold MRCP (UK) or equivalent / FRCPath or equivalent qualifications. Full GMC Registration and entry on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council (GMC) Register are also essential requirements. Evidence of understanding management issues, as well as evidence of understanding and involvement in audit and understanding of clinical governance are also essential.
Desirable Qualifications
While not mandatory, candidates with an appropriate higher degree such as an MD, PhD or equivalent, management training or qualification, or evidence of leadership in the development of clinical services will be viewed favorably. Previous NHS experience and peer-reviewed publications are also desirable but not essential requirements for this position.
Experience Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research, extensive experience and training in general clinical haematology, and experience of involvement in clinical research and audit. Experience of undergraduate/postgraduate training for doctors and other disciplines is also essential. A teaching diploma or qualification would be considered advantageous.
