About the Position
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Gastroenterologist and BCSP Colonoscopist to join their Department of Gastroenterology. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a newly built £15M, 5-room, state-of-the-art JAG accredited Endoscopy Suite. The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum on a full-time, permanent basis.
Job Summary
The Department of Gastroenterology in North Cumbria Hospitals is looking for an enthusiastic new colleague to join them on their journey to provide high-quality endoscopy and gastroenterology services. This role will focus on supporting the Bowel Cancer Screening service, with dedicated colonoscopic screening lists. You’ll be joining at an exciting time following the opening of their new Endoscopy Suite with a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures available, including ERCP.
Main Duties
The successful candidate will provide dedicated colonoscopic screening lists and contribute to inpatient and outpatient care alongside gastroenterology colleagues. The post holder will share responsibility as “Consultant of the Week” on a rotational basis to cover GI inpatient work and contribute to the GI bleed rota. There may be opportunities to take on leadership roles within Bowel Cancer Screening and general endoscopy services.
Teaching and Development Opportunities
The Trust is passionate about teaching and professional development. You’ll have opportunities to provide endoscopy training locally and contribute to the Northern Endoscopy Training Academy (NETA). The role involves recruitment of junior staff and supervision of their education, appraisal, and study leave. New consultants will be asked to enroll in an educational supervisor accredited course.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold Full GMC Registration, CCST Specialist Registration (or obtain within 6 months of interview date), Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), Bowel Cancer Screening Accreditation, and MRCP (UK). Clinical experience and competence in gastroenterology is essential, along with the ability to provide therapeutic endoscopy for GI bleeding.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, a postgraduate qualification in gastroenterology (European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology & Hepatology, MD, PhD or equivalent) would be advantageous. Screening Colonoscopy Level 3 Polypectomy and subspecialty expertise in gastroenterology or endoscopy are also desirable.
Clinical Governance Requirements
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate evidence of experience in Clinical Governance and have experience of Audit. Upholding Trust values and adhering to the GMC code of conduct are essential requirements for this position.
Management Skills
The ability to organize and manage your own workload efficiently is essential. Experience or qualification in clinical leadership/management would be advantageous for this role.
Research Opportunities
Experience of research is essential, with postgraduate research degree, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and the ability to supervise postgraduate research being desirable attributes for candidates.
