Proficiency in AutoCAD is essential for preparing manufacturing drawings, reading blueprints, and creating detailed product specifications. Candidates with additional experience in other computer-aided design (CAD) software or 3D modeling tools are encouraged to highlight those skills in their application.

Key Responsibilities
As the Industrial Designer at Costa Marble & Granite, you will be entrusted with a wide range of responsibilities that span the entire product development lifecycle. Below is a detailed breakdown of what the role entails:
Client and Stakeholder Consultation
You will consult directly with clients, engineers, and production specialists to establish clear product requirements. This involves understanding the client’s vision, functional needs, and aesthetic preferences, and translating those into actionable design briefs. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will need to present ideas, gather feedback, and iterate on designs in collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
Blueprint Reading and Interpretation
A significant part of your role will involve reading and interpreting blueprints to determine work requirements. You must be comfortable working with technical drawings and specifications, and able to extract the information needed to guide the production team through the manufacturing process. Accuracy and attention to detail are critical in this aspect of the role.
Research and Material Analysis
You will be responsible for conducting thorough research into the cost, properties, and characteristics of production materials, as well as the methods of production used in stone fabrication. This includes evaluating different types of marble, granite, and other natural stones to determine their suitability for specific applications. Understanding material properties such as durability, weight, finish options, and cost-effectiveness will help you make informed design decisions.
Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
Proficiency in CAD software, particularly AutoCAD, is at the core of this position. You will use CAD tools to create detailed designs, renderings, and technical drawings that communicate your design intent to clients and the production team. Your CAD work will serve as the blueprint for manufacturing, so precision and clarity are paramount.
Manufacturing Drawings and Specifications
You will prepare comprehensive manufacturing drawings, specifications, and guidelines for the production team. These documents must include all necessary dimensions, tolerances, material callouts, finish requirements, and assembly instructions. The quality of your manufacturing documentation directly impacts the efficiency and accuracy of the production process, making this one of the most important aspects of the role.
Prototype Construction
In addition to digital design work, you will also construct physical prototypes of your designs. This hands-on component of the role allows you to test and validate your designs before they go into full production. Building prototypes helps identify potential issues early and ensures that the final product meets the client’s expectations and quality standards.
Design Concept Development
You will prepare design concepts, sketches, and models for client and internal approval. This creative process involves brainstorming, sketching, and developing multiple design options that address the project’s requirements. You will present these concepts to stakeholders, incorporate feedback, and refine your designs until they are ready for production.
User-Centered Analysis
A key part of your role will be analyzing the intended use of products and user preferences. This means considering how the end user will interact with the product, what functional requirements are most important, and what aesthetic qualities will appeal to the target market. By putting the user at the center of your design process, you will create products that are both beautiful and practical.
Skills and Qualifications Summary
To succeed in this role, candidates should possess the following skills and qualifications: Proficiency in AutoCAD and computer-aided design (CAD) software; strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings; excellent communication and consultation skills for working with clients and cross-functional teams; experience in preparing manufacturing drawings, specifications, and production guidelines; ability to conduct research on materials, costs, and production methods; creativity and technical ability to develop design concepts, sketches, and prototypes; strong analytical skills for evaluating product use and user preferences; attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work; ability to work on site in Concord, ON; and eligibility to work in Canada (with or without a valid work permit).
