Clinical Psychologist at The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE)
The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.
Job Purpose
The Clinical Psychologist will provide specialised mental health services, including comprehensive psychological assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Working as part of the multidisciplinary General Medical and Surgical Services Directorate, the role holder will ensure holistic patient care, support recovery, and promote mental health awareness within the hospital.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Psychological Assessment
Conduct thorough psychological evaluations using interviews, psychometric testing, and behavioural observations.
Diagnose mental health conditions in line with recognised diagnostic frameworks.
Develop detailed psychological profiles to inform patient care.
Provide specialised assessments, including pre-surgical psychological evaluations.
Therapy and Intervention
Design and deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions, such as CBT, DBT, and psychotherapy.
Conduct individual, group, and family therapy sessions.
Monitor progress and adapt treatment plans accordingly.
Provide crisis intervention for patients in acute distress.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Work closely with medical and surgical teams to integrate psychological care into overall treatment plans.
Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences for complex patient care.
Deliver training to clinical teams on psychological care strategies.
Research and Education
Engage in research relevant to mental health in healthcare settings.
Develop educational resources and mental health awareness programs.
Mentor and train junior staff, residents, and students in psychological practice.
Patient Advocacy
Advocate for the inclusion of psychological support in patient care pathways.
Educate patients and families about mental health conditions and treatments.
Support patients dealing with chronic illness or surgical recovery.
Administrative and Governance Duties
Maintain accurate and confidential patient records.
Prepare reports for referrals, treatment outcomes, and progress updates.
Contribute to developing mental health policies and quality standards.
Professional Development
Stay updated on the latest developments in clinical psychology and integrate new practices into patient care.
Participate in relevant workshops, conferences, and supervision.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology.
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
Registration/licensure to practice as a clinical psychologist.
Demonstrated expertise in therapeutic modalities such as CBT, DBT, and psychotherapy.
Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in clinical psychology within a healthcare setting.
Proven experience in multidisciplinary team-based patient care.
Familiarity with psychological assessment tools and evidence-based therapies.
Experience in clinical research and publications (preferred).
In-depth knowledge of psychological disorders, treatment modalities, and cultural influences on mental health.
Understanding of ethical and legal standards in clinical psychology.
