The Well Engineer Specialist, Drilling Fluid and Cuttings provides technical assurance for drilling fluids and waste management, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient well delivery. This role is based in Lagos/Port Harcourt with travel to rig sites and operational assets, reporting to the Manager, Drilling Engineering.
Responsibilities:
Develop drilling fluid and completion fluid programs tailored to well objectives, formation characteristics, and operational requirements.
Provide technical input during well planning, design reviews, and drilling program development to ensure fluid systems support drilling performance and wellbore stability.
Monitor drilling fluid performance throughout operations to ensure wellbore stability, hole cleaning efficiency, and pressure management.
Troubleshoot drilling fluid challenges including losses, contamination, differential sticking, and filtration issues to minimize downtime and well risks.
Oversee the handling, treatment, transportation, and disposal of drill cuttings and effluents in accordance with environmental regulations and company standards.
Coordinate waste management contractors and service providers to ensure effective waste processing, containment, and disposal.
Track drilling fluid consumption, losses, inventory levels, and service costs against approved budgets to maintain cost control.
Lead and coordinate rig-site fluids teams and collaborate with Well Operations Supervisors, Well Engineers, SCM, and HSE personnel to align fluid activities with well objectives.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
IWCF (International Well Control Forum) Drilling Supervisor Level certification (mandatory).
HSE certification (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, or equivalent).
BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) certification.
Minimum 7-10 years of experience in drilling fluids engineering and drilling waste management within oil and gas operations.
Strong knowledge of water-based, oil-based, and synthetic-based drilling fluid systems.
Experience in cuttings handling, solids control, filtration systems, and effluent treatment technologies.
Knowledge of environmental regulations, API standards, ISO standards, and drilling waste compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
Professional certification in drilling fluids technology.
Experience with offshore, deepwater, HPHT, and complex well operations.
Experience with fluid recycling, waste minimization, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
