Main Duties of the Job
The purpose of this post is to provide Emergency services to the population served by Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Applicants with special interests would be supported in developing these within the department. Those with an interest and aptitude for leadership roles within and beyond the department are particularly welcome to apply. Candidates must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview).
Clinical Responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide Emergency services, to receive, diagnose and treat all categories of accident & emergencies as may attend the department. You will arrange for the appropriate transfer of patients to in-patient facilities, outpatient referral or discharge to primary care as indicated. You will participate in an on-call out of hours rota on a one in twelve basis. The Consultant Rota is based on self-rostering with a weekend frequency of one in six weekends.
Teaching and Training
As a Consultant, you will be responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity. You will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff, medical students and other professional staff who work with you and will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, you will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training.
Service Development
You will have responsibilities to develop Emergency services and participate in multidisciplinary meetings in relation to these services. You will be required to participate in audit, clinical governance, annual job plan and appraisal. For those that are dual accredited, there may also be an opportunity to maintain skills linked to their other specialty, e.g., ICM, PHEM, Acute Medicine, Paediatrics, which may be included in their core job plan.
Academic Opportunities
Due to close ties between the hospital and the University of Buckingham Medical School, opportunities will also arise to take on roles in the development of our future doctors which include the delivery of lectures and leading clinical blocks. This is a 10PA contract, 7.5PA DCC and 2.5 PA SPA, but options may arise to take on additional clinical PAs. Management and leadership roles may attract additional programmed activities and/or a responsibility allowance.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold a medical degree, FRCEM or equivalent. You will be required to maintain full registration with the General Medical Council and must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT. Additionally, you should have Advanced Life Support (Adult & Paediatric) as well as Advanced Trauma Life Support Provider or equivalent qualifications.
Essential Experience
You must have a minimum of seven years’ postgraduate experience, including higher medical training – five years as a Specialist Registrar/Trainee. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential. Recent experience in Emergency Medicine in the UK is essential for this position.
Desirable Qualifications
While not required, accreditation in education is considered desirable for this role. Other desirable qualifications include being an instructor in ALS, EPLS and/or ATLS, having an interest/qualification in education, or holding other tertiary qualifications including Education. These qualifications would strengthen your application.
Knowledge Requirements
Essential knowledge requirements include knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based practice and excellent clinical knowledge in emergency medicine. Desirable knowledge areas include breadth of experience within and outside speciality, and knowledge of clinical leadership and management topics.
Clinical Skills
Essential clinical skills include experience in leading the multi-disciplinary management of Emergency patients and understanding of clinical risk management. These skills are critical for effective leadership in a busy emergency department setting.
Communication Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. You should demonstrate compassionate communication with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels. Additionally, you must be committed to working in a multi-disciplinary team to improve care for patients and have the ability to appraise and supervise trainees and other staff members.
Leadership Skills
Essential leadership skills include the ability to motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff, a compassionate and inclusive leadership style, and a proven ability to lead by example. Experience in medical leadership and a desire to develop in this area is considered desirable.
