Job Summary
King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has a full-time vacancy for a Band 6 Senior Clinical Coding Analyst ACC at our Denmark Hill location in London. This role plays a pivotal part in the management of the coding department, supporting the team to meet deadlines, mentoring junior coders, and coordinating meetings with clinical staff to validate coded data.

Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Clinical Coding Analyst, you will assist in resolving coding queries raised by team members, sharing expertise and helping interpret complex information to ensure national standards are met. You’ll act as a liaison point with designated coders to discuss coding issues and provide advice on clinical documentation.
Your responsibilities will include liaising with clinical and audit staff to determine diagnoses and procedures to be coded, which may require advising and agreeing on sequencing of coding to help provide quality data for the Trust. You’ll access various information systems such as pathology to obtain information that enhances the completeness and accuracy of coding.
You’ll demonstrate compliance with complex changing terminology and its relationship to new surgical techniques and changes in diagnostic fields related to classification and medicine. You’ll support the Coding Manager in ensuring all outstanding coding is completed by SUS flex date and implement policies for your work area.
Other duties include ensuring all queries from Trust staff are resolved promptly and effectively, attending meetings with clinical staff (either alone or with the Coding Manager) to discuss coding issues, and providing day-to-day support for less experienced coding staff.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
You must hold the Accredited Clinical Coding (ACC) Qualification and have completed a Coding Standard Course. Attendance at workshops is essential, and you must be able to demonstrate evidence of coding a range of specialties.
Experience working in a large clinical coding department using ICD 10/OPCS 4 is essential, along with experience of meeting coding deadlines. You should have extensive knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy & physiology, plus an excellent understanding of HRG and Payment by Results (PbR).
Essential skills include the ability to prioritize conflicting demands, analyze and interpret complex medical information with attention to detail, and work both independently and as part of a team. You should have good interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive working relationships across all hospital staff.
Intermediate level keyboard skills with experience of Microsoft Teams are required. You should be able to demonstrate effective organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team while being highly motivated.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
While not essential, relevant qualifications such as a science or clinical degree would be advantageous. An AMSPAR certificate is also considered desirable.
Experience with Medicode systems would be beneficial, as would familiarity with the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system EPIC. Previous experience in remote working is also considered desirable as this role offers the option to work remotely on a part-time basis, up to 80% of your workable hours, subject to service needs.
Training and Development
You’ll have access to training courses and workshops delivered by our in-house Clinical Coding Training Team, with support to further your career in clinical coding. Mandatory training sessions include specialized workshops and a refresher course every three years.
You’ll be expected to maintain and update a personal copy of relevant coding manuals in accordance with national standards and guidance from line managers, referring to these manuals daily. You’ll also receive training in new clinical coding schemes such as SNOMED CT according to local plans and timetables.
Salary and Benefits
This Band 6 position is offered with a salary of £46,419 to £55,046 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance and an additional 15% R&R Premium. The salary is paid monthly through the NHS payroll system.
In addition to your salary, you’ll receive 27 days of annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata for part-time staff), increasing with length of service. You’ll also have access to the NHS Pension Scheme, one of the most generous pension schemes in the UK, with employer contributions worth at least 14.3% of your salary.

Working Pattern and Location
This is a full-time, permanent position based at King’s College Hospital Denmark Hill, located at 245A Coldharbour Lane, London, SW9 8RR. The standard working week is 37.5 hours, typically worked Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm, though some flexibility may be required to meet service needs.
We offer the option to work remotely on a part-time basis, up to 80% of your workable hours, subject to service needs and agreement with your line manager. This hybrid working model provides a better work-life balance while maintaining face-to-face collaboration when needed.
The Denmark Hill campus is well-connected by public transport, with Denmark Hill train station (London Overground and National Rail) nearby, as well as multiple bus routes. The hospital is also accessible by car, though parking is limited and permits are required.
