Location
The position is based at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, which serves as a major teaching hospital and Neuroscience centre. The hospital is easily accessible and provides a modern working environment with state-of-the-art facilities for stroke care and treatment.
Compensation and Benefits
This consultant position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, in addition to the standard NHS benefits package. The role is permanent and offers flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance.
Working Pattern
The position is offered as full-time with flexibility in working hours. Applicants will be expected to contribute to weekend working at no more than 1 in 7 frequency and provide out-of-hours advice on thrombolysis and thrombectomy as part of a regional network.
Essential Qualifications
Candidates must have experience making independent stroke reperfusion decisions and demonstrate a thorough understanding of NHS governance processes. Essential qualifications include entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist register through one of the following pathways: Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) in a medical specialty (with proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), or European Community Rights.
Desirable Qualifications
While not mandatory, preference will be given to candidates who have completed stroke specialist training, have experience and interest in stroke rehabilitation, and have attended appropriate courses, fellowships or equivalent. Experience in teaching, research, and management is also highly valued.
Research and Clinical Audit
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate evidence of a research interest and clinical audit experience. Desirable qualifications in this area include presentations at local/regional/national/international meetings, relevant audit projects, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and experience recruiting patients to stroke clinical trials.
Teaching Responsibilities
Applicants must be able to demonstrate experience in teaching resident doctors. While not essential, evidence of enthusiasm and experience in teaching, along with teaching qualifications, would be advantageous. The role involves participation in training and education of medical students, resident medical staff, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.
Management Experience
Candidates should have clinical management experience, such as serving as a rota coordinator, trainee representative, or committee membership. A thorough understanding of NHS governance processes is essential. Evidence of interest and ability in management, attendance at appropriate courses, and experience in multidisciplinary team working are desirable.
Practical Requirements
The successful candidate must have the ability and willingness to work the required hours, shifts, and on-call duties, with reasonable adjustments for disabilities. Having access to personal transport is desirable to fulfill the duties of the role effectively.
Communication Skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role, including team working abilities and appropriate delegation skills. While not required, good presentation skills, IT technology skills, and leadership abilities would be advantageous.
