Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist Learning Disabilities to join their Child and Adolescent Intellectual Disability Service (CAIDS). This is a permanent, part-time position based at CAMHS Tonteg Hospital in Tonteg, Wales. The successful candidate will be part of a growing specialist team that provides services for children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities and co-existing mental health disorders.
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £110,240 to £160,951 per annum, pro rata for part-time work. This salary aligns with the UK’s Consultant pay scales for medical professionals. Contract and Schedule

Role Overview
Service Description
The Child and Adolescent Intellectual Disability Service (CAIDS) is a specialist multi-disciplinary team providing services for children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities and co-existing mental health disorders. The service works in partnership with local secondary CAMHS and Paediatric services and specialist educational establishments, providing specialist assessments to enable appropriate support, advice, and treatment for children and young people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Main Responsibilities
The Consultant Psychiatrist will be responsible for improving outcomes for intellectually disabled children and young people in South Wales through the provision of timely, high-quality, easily accessible, effective, and cost-efficient multi-disciplinary support. Key responsibilities include providing developmentally appropriate evidence-based specialist mental health interventions, offering culturally appropriate services that support the local BME community, and providing appropriate access to families through the medium of Welsh.
Service Development
Through the provision of a clinical consultation service for staff working with children and young people in universal and targeted settings, the Consultant will improve the early recognition of difficulties and provision of appropriate early interventions. The role also involves developing skills and competencies within specialist NHS CAMHS and supporting the wider children and young people’s workforce through appropriate training and service development programmes.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold an MB, BS or equivalent medical qualification and have GMC Full Registration/Licence to Practice. Approved Clinician Status is required, or willingness to undertake the training/approval process immediately. Candidates must be on the Specialist Register for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or be within 6 months of their anticipated CCT (CP) or CESR date.
Essential Experience
The successful candidate will have completed Higher specialist Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CCT) or CESR, with previous experience working within a CAMHS setting. Demonstrated ability to manage complexity and uncertainty is essential. Excellent knowledge in the specialty with experience working across the whole life course and presenting problems reflecting the full range of clinical severity is required.
Essential Skills
Strong clinical skills using a bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge are essential. The ability to demonstrate commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working to deliver improvement is crucial. Effective communication skills – both verbal and written – are required, along with being up to date with current practices in child and adolescent psychiatry and able to meet duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Desirable Attributes
While not essential, qualifications or higher degrees in medical education, clinical research, management, or leadership are advantageous. Previous experience as a Consultant in CAMHS and wide experience and skill in therapeutic work with children, young people, and their families are also desirable. Research/academic interests in areas of special expertise and the ability to communicate in Welsh are considered beneficial.
