The Role: Consultant Haematologist
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Consultant Haematologist to join our team at Darlington Memorial Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to develop haematology services in County Durham and Darlington while advancing your career in the NHS.
The post is on a whole time basis with the department willing to explore flexibility in job plans to attract the right candidate. You will form part of a current team of 6 Consultant Haematologists across the Trust.
This appointment will facilitate and contribute to the development of Haematology services within the Trust and clinical networks. Within this job there will be scope to develop a specialist interest based on your expertise and the needs of the service.
Key Responsibilities
The post holder will be expected to undertake clinical work in conjunction with colleagues and other professional staff to maintain and develop haematology services and develop specialist skills in accordance with departmental needs.
You will be responsible, in conjunction with colleagues, for planning future development of these services and working with appropriate stakeholders in primary care and tertiary centres to continue developing integrated services.
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultant colleagues in other clinical disciplines in the hospital and to general practitioners within the locality.
On-Call Requirements
The post holder will participate in a weekday and weekends on-call rota for haematology services. You will be expected to cover colleagues in their absence and ensure continuous patient care.
You will also be expected to deputise in the absence of colleagues in cases of annual leave, study leave and sickness as far as is practicable, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to patient care.
Person Specification: Essential Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must have full registration with the General Medical Council and evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in haematology. You must be able to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
You must demonstrate the ability to offer expert clinical opinions within the specialty and possess excellent communication skills. The ability to work effectively in a team with medical and nursing colleagues, managers, biomedical scientists and patients is essential.
A broad range of IT skills, an understanding of clinical governance, evidence of participation in audit, and good knowledge of spoken and written English are all essential requirements for this role.
Person Specification: Desirable Requirements
While not essential, having a specialist interest that complements the current service would be advantageous. Experience of participation in research and clinical studies is also desirable.
Management and administrative experience, evidence of having implemented change, and evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit would make you a stronger candidate for this position.
Additional qualifications such as MRCP part 1 and evidence of attending courses to develop teaching skills would be beneficial but are not mandatory requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential qualifications include full registration with the General Medical Council, membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent, and membership of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent.
You must hold an MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical degree and be the holder of a certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Haematology, or be within 6 months of receiving this certificate.
Essential experience includes evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in haematology, the ability to take independent responsibility for patient care, and the ability to offer expert clinical opinions within the specialty.
Working Environment
The haematology department is well-equipped with modern facilities including day units at multiple sites that provide facilities for bone marrow biopsy, intravenous chemotherapy, venesections, and other procedures.
We use the chemocare chemotherapy prescribing system in line with most other haematology services in the region. The department has strong links with regional centres for specialised services and participates in regular multidisciplinary team meetings.
