Role Summary
The successful candidate will be appointed as a Locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry to support and maintain our Paediatric Dentistry Consultant Service. You will provide expert dental care to children with complex comorbidities, working closely with multidisciplinary teams across various specialties including cardiology, inherited metabolic diseases, oncology, and haematology.
This is a part-time position based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, with sessions to be negotiated. Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
You will provide a comprehensive Paediatric Dentistry consultant service for patients referred from hospital colleagues, general medical and dental practitioners, and community dental services across the region. This includes developing and expanding established patient pathways and providing treatment for complex cases.
You will deliver specialist care under inhalation sedation for children with behavioural problems and dental phobias, and provide dental care under general anaesthesia for children with medical, mental, and physical special needs at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Education and Training
The role involves clinical supervision, education, and training for Dental Nurses, Dental Therapists, postgraduate dentists, and doctors in training. You will participate in postgraduate training across West and East Midlands and undergraduate training in conjunction with The University of Birmingham School of Dentistry.
Management and Research
You will be managerially and financially accountable for the delivery and quality of services. We encourage involvement in research, audit, and contribution to national and regional NHS committees as time permits. Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) and registration as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry with the GDC. Successful completion of an SAC-approved training programme in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent is also required.
Essential Experience
You must have experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching, training in teaching, effective participation in clinical audit, and publications in refereed journals. Clinical experience within both Community Dental Service and hospital settings is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based care.
Experience in managing complex cases and working in a multidisciplinary team environment is also essential. You should be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and colleagues.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, possession of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent, an MSc or equivalent qualification, and research relevant to the Paediatric Dentistry specialty would be advantageous. Additional qualifications in sedation techniques or special care dentistry would also be beneficial.

The salary range of £109,725 to £145,478 per annum reflects the senior nature of this position and is highly competitive for international dental professionals relocating to the UK. This salary is inclusive of London weighting, if applicable, and is paid monthly.

Working Arrangements
This is a part-time locum position with a duration of 12 months. The exact working pattern will be negotiable based on mutual agreement. The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, requiring a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
The working week is typically Monday to Friday, with the possibility of some weekend work on a rotational basis, depending on service demands. The trust is committed to promoting work-life balance and offers flexible working arrangements where possible.

Professional Registration Requirements
All applicants must hold current UK professional registration with the General Dental Council. For overseas-trained dentists, we can provide guidance on the registration process, which includes verification of qualifications and English language proficiency. The GDC requires proof of English language proficiency for overseas applicants, typically through IELTS or OET.
We can assist with the necessary documentation required for GDC registration, including certificates of good standing from previous dental boards, proof of qualifications, and references. We also offer support in preparing for any required examinations or interviews.
